Hey guys just seeing if some more wise 1911 buffs can help me out.

I have a Bob Cogan Custom 5" 1911 SA loaded, and I really want to carry it but I need to find a comfortable holster. I'm 160lbs at 5' 9" meduim build.

Can anyone help with what style and brand holster and even a good priced internet site to help. BTW its hard chromed so it needs a protective flap to go between me and my baby. Any help?

long wait time, but I cant carry for 8 months anyway so now is the perfect time to order it. I want a black one to match my gun, seems brownells doesnt have black........

Get the right belt too

For advice tell us more - wear with jeans and windbreaker? wear with Dockers and a shirt? wear with coat and tie? wear strong side hip? wear for driving a lot or for standing around a lot?

I'd go Alessi - especially to include the GWH - for strong side behind the hip in jeans and windbreaker/vest/ the right heavy canvas weight square hemmed shirt with weighted hem - that's my choice and circumstance.

I'd maybe go Tucker for tuckable and Tony at Milt Sparks for a variation on the Summer Special notion for dressy slacks and a sometimes sportcoat with a tie. Lots of others, Horseshoe is good - if you want something to ride a little higher or a little lower to suit you personally Del Fatti.

Not my own choice but Dave Workman's design for Mitch Rosen has a great reputation.

Milt Sparks Summer Special II by far is the best for 1911's. The best price is from Lightning Arms Sports at [email protected] and they normally have what you need in stock. My Sigs ride in the Versa Max II.

Milt Sparks, Oh Yeah :D

well I live in Florida and mostly wear light clothing, jeans and a tee, shorts and tee, jeans with polo shirt. In winter Ill be wearing jackets leather, nylon, etc so it wouldnt be a problem comcealing then.

For IWB and OWB carry I love Andy Arratoonian's leather (www.holsters.org, wonderful site). Quite expensive, but excellent.
For my Colt 1991 5" I use 62L model for IWB and 22H model for OWB, and I am quite small and thin guy!

If you like kydex: KyTac or Comp-Tac.

Leather: Milt Sparks or Lou Alessi.

I've found the Milt Sparks Versa-Max II to be one hell of a single-stack holster. It's the bomb.

If you look at Milt Sparks check out the HR-LTD. Some are saying its an improved VMII.

Its under the New Products section.

also check out the holster forum on 1911forum.com

You didn't ask but

You didn't ask but I'd consider an a-shirt under the polo and maybe more long pants to go with your gun belt rather than just shorts and t-shirt plus 5" 1911. Wear a shirt/bellyband/athletic garment/under armor/ between your gun/holster and your skin!

For true shorts and t-shirt consider off body - I like a day planner better than a belt pack but don't put the day planner down or fill your other hand either.

Not my circumstance and I don't own one but with less structured clothing I'd go with a more structured holster with leather fore and aft of the gun pancake style rather than a folded over Bruce Nelson with a clip or clamp or slot right over the thickest part. Part of the GWH notion is to combine with belt AND good pants for a structure - a solid structure someplace in the rig helps me.

Certainly an awful lot of people here know more than I do and likely some of them will speak up?
- that's one reason I'm posting I'd like comments from the experts -
but for light clothing I'd look at lots of structure in the holster and use the clothing more as a cover garment. Doesn't do much good to weight shorts down and less to pull hip-hop pants up by a fancy cocobolo handle.

On the other hand there is much to be said for the one gun/one carry rule and adapt your lifestyle to that carry.

I really like the Wilson Practical and the Sparks 55BN. The Wilson is fast and looks great in sharkskin. In trade for it's speed, it doesn't pull the butt of the pistol in real tight to your body, so you need to wear something loose or it will print. The 55BN is slower, but rides higher and pulls in tighter, so it conceals much better. I can conceal a Govt model with the 55BN no problem. Neither of these rigs has a sweat shield, as I personally don't like them. I think they add bulk, and there's always the chance your thumb will go between the sweat shield and your body on the draw. I have a hard chromed gun and it has never given me any grief from perspiration.

My Summer Special II is the nicest holster I've ever owned for any gun. I borrowed a VMII, but preferred the Summer Special II.

Many folks swear by a very good belt. I've never owned one, but I would consider a good belt as part of the price in a steel 1911 carry rig. I've been pretty well served by Dickies belts from Walmart. I also have had very good luck with two Faded Glory triple stitched belts with an insert of some kind. Very rigid belt.

The short answer is "Milt Sparks VM-2H."

Also, the importance of using a good STIFF belt cannot be overstated. Carrying a gun as heavy as a full size 1911 with a crappy belt will get uncomfortable very quickly. With a good belt, you will forget it's there.

Where in Florida are you?

I use Gordon Davis Gunleather for all of my needs. He has been at it for 35-40 years and makes what I like. He also made all of my Cowboy Leather that I use. His number is 1-928-637-0111. Give him a call.

I wanted a Milt Sparks VM2 but I didn't have 3 months to wait for it so I bought a Threat Solutions UCR. It is very comfortable and conceals great. It seems to be made well.

I looked and looked. I wanted an MS VM2. I was told a 12 week wait. I bought a nylon holster for now and ordered the VM2. Had it in 8 weeks. I have held many a holster, the VM2 is second to none.

You can get VMII's without the wait from the fine people at Lightning Arms Sports. Great people, easy to deal with. You'll pay another $18 or so over retail from Sparks, but you can have the holster immediately.

That's what I did. Well worth it.

My 5 inch 1911 is in a Milt Sparks NP-1. This holster really tucks the gun into your body and it's very concealable. I tried 4 other holsters before this one and was ready to give up trying to conceal a 5 inch 1911, none of them tucked the gun in enough to conceal it.

You know, this might sound crazy. But sort through the "used" holster bin at your local gun shop!!
I found a Kramer belt scabbard AND a DeSantis #2 there and paid $5 each for them!!!

Ofttimes, gun shops will strip off the holster that comes with guns that they take in and sell them for a fraction of what they cost new!! Holsters hold no interest for gun shop owners!!
