need trade up advice

I currently own a Marlin 30-30, model 30as,which I bought used for around 230.00(probably paid too much)It is the first rifle Iv'e owned in twentyfive years. Since then Iv'e bought many more including what may be my favorite, a Ruger GP100-ss,4 in. barrel. I am considering trading the 30-30 for a companion piece to the GP100 possibly the Marlin 1894c, a lever action carbine chambered for .357 mag. and .38spcl. Since I love to shoot ,I find the cost per round to be a huge factor(.15 cents/round vs..60 cents/round).I should mention that I am not a hunter but I certainly would if I had to.Can the 1894c compare to the 30as for shooting enjoyment ?How do they compare in accuracey at distances up to 100 yards?Also, who else produces rifles chambered for .357 cartridges? The one thing I don't want to do is regret getting rid of a perfectly functional, accurate Marlin model 30as.Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

If it were me, I would seriouly look into getting the .357 1894 Marlin. I would like to have one myself. Whether or not to add your 30-30 to the trade depends on what you can get out of it. Generally, gunstores don't give you what a gun is really worth. You will probably only get about $130 for it if you sell it outright to them, a little more if it is on a trade. Since you won't get much anyway, maybe you would be better off to keep it and just save a little more.

Hunting

I'm like you also Angus regarding the hunting & love for shooting. However, I'm going to try to squeeze in 1-2 hunting trips per year to hone those someday "might have to" skills.

Trade the Marlin fo rthe one you want - at least you will have something you will shoot - and practice is the name of the game.

Were it me, and I wanted to part with a 30-30 and get a .357 lever gun, I would ask around and try to sell it private party. You may get enough for it to buy the .357. If you trade it at a shop, the will give you less than what it is worth. Bear in mind that they are not trying to rip you off, but rather they have to keep the lights on and need to make profit. The up side to trading is you have a paper trail releasing you from whatever happens after you let it go. Also, it may be a while before you can sell it and if you want the .357 now, they will help.

You may want to post some pics of it here, there always seems to be guys looking for good 30-30s.

Actually, wait... It's probably a good thing cause I'd be parted with a few hundred dollars more Always liked that model of Marlin. It's the straight stock model, correct?
