New "assault rifle" with plenty of "military features"

Just picked up my christmas present from Dunhams today. It has been on backorder since black friday. This is my first entry into the mosin nagant market. Its a 1943 Izhevsk and it looks like I have a de-cosmoline project for this weekend.

That's about right... My tactical rack at the shop has three Chinese Mosin carbines, a Yugo 44, and two H&R Trapdoor Springfields.

Nagants are very fun to shoot. The 4th of July a couple employees and myself at the farm I worked at we went out back of the barn and went shooting. In the scrap pile was an old push mower. I had my M44 with me. One of the other guys had a 308 and tried to put a round through the motor block of push mower. Didn't go through, I took the m44 and went through and hit the paint can behind it and started it and the mower on fire. Big mushroom cloud. Very fun times with the m44 and big brother 91/30.

The importation of this sort of "assault weapon" is why this country has such a shockingly high rate of drive by bayonetings! There's obviously no legitimate bayoneting purpose for a weapon so long that you can bayonet things on the other side of a divided six lane freeway!

Love my 91-30. A hint with the cosmoline- I stripped the gun and soaked each piece in low odor mineral spirits. Stuff comes right off and its not harmful. Enjoy!

Here is my cosmaline tip that has worked excellent for me. Field strip the rifle and then heat everything up with a hair dryer until the cosmaline melts off. Then wipe everything clean with some shop rags.

It shocks and disgusts me that you are so callous about having such a dangerous weapon in a civilian's hands! That is a HIGH CAPACITY (5 rounds) weapon of WAR!! With a bayonet! Nobody NEEDS a bayonet!




Have fun with it! I love my 1930 91/30, lots of fun to shoot, and I did bayonet a cardboard box... If I do my part, I can easily hit a man sized target at 100 yards. Not bad for an 83 year old gun, some surplus ammo, and someone who is not a great shot with rifles.

I love the sound those things make when fired. A friend of mine is a serious Mosin collector. We often wonder what the Russians would think of us Americans shooting the old Mosin Nagant in America for target practice.

I doubt you could fit much more than the bolt of a 91/30, but a dishwasher works well to quickly and easily de-cosmoline milsurps of more manageable proportions. A field stripped M-44 fits fairly easily if you remove the top rack of the washer.

I got one of those blue speckled turkey roaster pans and boiled the smaller parts in water. Cosmo floats to the top.

Pay extreme attention to the chamber as cases tend to stick if it's not completely cleaned out.

Thanks guys. I got the rifle apart and started "sweating" the cosmoline out of the stock with a hair dryer. All I worked on was the top handguard....there is a lot of cosmoline in there!

My M91/30 is so much fun, I just bought a M1944 to keep it company. Can't wait so see the fireballs.

AIMSurplus still has non-corrosive Russian 7.62x54R at $6.50 a box (http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.a...ssian+7.62x54R+148grn+FMJ+20rd+Box&groupid=40) if you don't want to clean up after corrosive.

The Mosin is one of 4 as issued, real military rifles I own. Enjoy your weapon of war! Try to resist the urge to yell "death to fascists!" when you shoot it, some of the people at the range chuckle but most look at you really strange.

(For another $100 you can pick up the sidearm the Russians used in WWII along with the Mosin.)

LOL. I did this with a chicom SKS way back in the 80's. One thing to note, that narrow stream high pressure car wash hose will cut you! I still bear the scar on my right forearm from that method of decosmolining, yet I long ago sold that rifle.

Years ago (about 15 to 20) when buying Mosins, SKS and other military surplus rifles for resale at shows or in our shop that is what I did. I hit them good with engine gunk and took them to the do it yourself high pressure car wash, tossed in a mountain of quarters and was good to go. For a single rifle a heat gun did fine but when you have 20 or 30 the Gunk and Car Wash was the solution.
