I'm sitting at work on Thursday and my wife calls to let me know my bonus was direct deposited in our bank account. She goes on to say she took care of the bills we wanted to pay and "set aside $800 so you can go buy the gun you've wanted." At first, I refused but she insisted since in her words, "you work hard and deserve a treat." So, I'm now the proud owner of a brand new Bushmaster 20" AR-15. Since this was a planned purchase there were already 8 USGI mags waiting for it at home. Now, I have to get this thing to the range. The only question I have is there a process for breaking them in? My only experience with this type of weapon is the M-16A2 while on active duty, and the A1 at my current National Guard unit. Needless to say, the military issue weapons aren't nearly as tight as the Bushy. At first I thought something was wrong until I remembered this gun wasn't issued to 100 different yahoos that didn't care about it.

Thanks

i bought a new 16" hbar shorty bushmaster and absolutly love the gun.as far as breaking it in,i took it home, broke it down to every spring and pin, cleaned it, reassembled it and put a few drops of rem oil on the moving parts in the trgigger assembly.shot it 40 times, cleaned it and another string of 40 rapid fire.cleaned it again.just how i do things.youre right about the sloppy m16s,they are not taken care of and probably had many many rounds fired through them.to qualify with them,we merely had to hit the target anywhere in the center "area".was alot more difficult than thought with some not even being able to do that(even hit the paper altogether) at 100 yards on semi and up close for rapid fire, these being people who shoot often enough to know better.they rattled worse than a seasoned 1911.big difference between a new one or even a well taken care of gun than one thats just used for training.havent had a malfunction as of yet in my bushmaster and it has gone on varmit hunts when shooting my regular varmit rife gets boring.p.s. you are lucky,my wife only tolerates my guns and would rather buy a basket but is negotable when i want a gun as long as she gets equal value spending on a basket.lol

Congrats Ninj500,

Like Standingbear, I went with the 16" Bushy. Love that rifle! Sounds like you have a great and very understanding wife. Now go out and have fun with her (the wife and the gun).

Per Bushmaster, clean and lube before going to range. Fire 200 rounds of fmj to polish the chrome-lined bore. Then go about regular cleaning schedule.

You're probably going to find that your trigger pulls at around 8#. You'll have to go to an aftermarket trigger to correct that.

Does she have a sister?!

:D

Hate is a strong word, so I will say that my wife strongly dislikes guns, more out of irrational fear than malice. Her mom is paranoid, and a peace-mo, and shes a product of her environment. She doesnt even let her son go outside with a BB rifle to shoot at squirrels eating through the roof because shes convinced that a cop is going to speed up and shoot him. Count yourself lucky my friend, very lucky.

Does she have a sister?!

It get's better. This is the same woman that bought me a beautiful Browning A-bolt 30/06 a few years back. We went in to get the FM Hi-Power I picked out and she found out I was buying a "copy" to save money. She knew I wanted a rifle for deer hunting (we lived in Texas at the time) talked to the clerk, and picked out the Browning. I didn't even know about it until they were ringing us up! I could go on about how she arranged a gun range trip for the two of us on Valentine's day, or that she can out shoot about everybody we know. Just as good was letting me play golf on our 5-year anniversary, etc, etc. Without a doubt I over married. Yes, she does have a sister.

On topic, the Bushmaster's fit and finish is excellent for a rifle of this type. Now I need to get it to the range. The next range visit will be a good one, a new Bushmaster and a new (to me) Series I SS Kimber Pro Carry HD. I'm giddy with anticipation!

From the Bushmaster Firearms FAQ's.

Q. What is the proper "break-in" procedure for a chrome lined AR barrel?

A. After firing a couple hundred rounds, the chrome lining will "polish out" from its light, flat gray, factory-new look to a brightly reflective, polished appearance. During this break-in period, excessive cleaning with solvent or brush should be avoided as that will only prolong the time (and number of rounds) it takes to achieve the final "bullet polishing" of the barrel.

Lots of good information on that site.

Good Shooting

I've used the following break-in procedure on every new firearm I've purchased:

1. Remove from box or case
2. Load it
3. Shoot the heck out of it
4. Clean it
5. Repeat

Congrats on the new Bushy.

I'm on the gun gravy train with my wife as well. She has bought me some nice guns...Benelli, Kimber .22, Bushy, Leupold Tacticool scope...

What should I ask for for the First Anniversary? I'm thinking a new rollmark Colt to use as a base gun for some C&S modifications. I really want a mid-grade SxS shotgun though, I guess I'll have to be patient.

Nothing says love like a planned trip to the range and money set aside for a new gun!

Lucky man!! Enjoy the new Bushy! I am happy you got a bushmaster, they need the support right now, and probably one of the better AR makers.

Coincidence, I bought a new 20" Bushmaster as well

My girlfriend was "worried" about terrorists and sorta said something to the effect of "scary terrorists" and "guns" and some other stuff. All in all, it translated to "Marc, go buy a Bushmaster to make the girlfriend feel better."

Now she's jealous of my new friend and doesn't feel any better.

But I do.

Come on, you guys are describing a fantasy girl friend and wife.

She says, "let me shoot, I might buy you a gun for your birthday, go ahead honey and buy your AR-15, you deserve it." If true, you guys are so lucky.

Sigh!

My dear departed wife hated the few guns I had when she was living. After a long illness, culminating in her merciful death (she suffered so much), I went a bit crazy buying guns.

Still, I feel guilty, when buying a gun because of her memory of disapproval, and to have a lady that is supportive of your hobby is an enviable thing.

Of course, I would give up every gun I own to have her back, but I envy your situation. A girl that says, it is okay to own a gun.

Finally got the Bushmaster to the range. I'm so used to shooting the M-16 in the military I fell right into that mode. Right up until I banged the loaded magazine againts my Kevlar before inserting it in the gun. Except, I was at the local gun range and not wearing a Kevlar.OUCH! Old habit.
