To all the wise,
i just got my fn fal .308 and not really happy with it. It dings to bottleneck of the casing when ejected i ajst gas from min to max and of course at max casing is destroyed.waited 2 1/2 months after ordering from atlantic firearms, on the sales line this rifle not put together with worn parts kit. When received it open up receiver and where the upper meets the lower has a3/16"gap and wiggle also the locking doesn't lock tight once closed about a 1/16 of play and after only 20 rds was starting to eat the rear i needs to be built up i guess. My accuracy is nill of course because of the lack of holding upper/lower together properly. Going to see of tighting the pivot point and should i replace the locking pin or buildup the current one. I am new to this fal but not even my ar's has these kind of problems. The finish is good and all screw loose but the rear sight assy. Excuse for such a long post you help is needed thx's a-fixer

Welcome to THR.

I think the technical support subforum is for site techical support, not firearm tech support. Figure a better forum to help your problem. Rifle country might be better.

Ask a Mod about moving the post.

first off, what kind of reciever is this built on? parts kit?

second...are you getting a full engagement on the locking latch? does the latch have any spring?

Really you sound like you might have several different issues there friend. Only thing I can suggest is the falfiles.com Had some issues with my FAL and had a fella in Dallas take care of it. Sledgehammer is his handle over there on that board and he had it for about 2 weeks, I guess. came back shooting like a dream.

NOW...it will ding the brass on the case mouth a bit...you can solve some of that by adjusting the gas system down to where you want it to just dribble the brass out (figuratively speaking of course).

Hope this helps a bit...you have a great rifle, just needs some work. Perhaps Atlantic will give you some compensation in its repair.

Sounds like a sloppy build to me. There are some companies out there that just slap FALs together with whatever parts are laying about. I had an L1A1 that would never work right, sold it to my brother with full disclosure of the issues. It sits in the back of his safe cause he has not had it looked at. The play between the upper and lower should be almost zero. Could be the latch in the lower or the lug on the upper is out of spec. Do you know who made the upper? My FAL is built on a DSA and I have had no issues other than operator error. Good luck and let us know what happens.

And welcome to THR.

A-fixer,

did a bit of research on the FAL's that Atlantic sells...Imbel parts kits that are assembled on Entreprise recievers.

Mind you, Entreprise recievers aren't junk, they fall about in the middle. DSA and Imbel on top, Century somewhere down below...they can be good, but don't roll those dice. :)

Now..the assembly of all these parts are probably whats the issue here...you just throw the parts together without actually eye-balling them has gotten you where you are at now possibly. Never can really tell. When I got my first FAL I naturally had a very nice single shot rifle. Took it all apart and checked it out real good, cleaned it, and reassembled it. And in reassembling it I put the gas plug in set for grenade. in other words, single shot. :)

bottom line? patience...I am confident that you have a fine rifle that just needs a knowing hand.

Just one tip for the FAL...much like mechanics, you have gunsmiths that specialize in certain firearms. Sledge is one of them.

good luck bro.

[Rant mode ON] Sort of an aside... rant if you will.

In the last several years, every single US made firearm I have acquired has had QC issues that would readily have been discovered had anybody just looked at it. It is to the point anymore where, when I buy a US firearm, I go home, don't even open the package, and I want to put a shipping label on it back to the factory to ask them to go over it before I go to the range and discover the inevitable defect in manufacture.

What ever happened to doing it right the first time?

[Rant off..]

As far as the bent brass goes that is just "FAL brass" it comes out during resizing. With cheap surplus ammo you should be able to adjust the gas setting so that it just drops the brass to full on toss to the weeds. If it won't there could be issues with the gas system.
The gap seems large. Make sure you "slam" it shut a couple of times to be sure it is latching completly, they can be very stiff when new.
Accuracy wise the gun should shoot decent groups even with the gap, if it can be stablized, put a chunk of hard rubber in the gap close it and shoot it again. Remove the slop and shoot for group from a good rest before you return it.
I have a Enterprise FAL and it took a couple of return trips to get it shooting straight. FAL it is not a hard gun to get to operate properly and shoot but to get it to shoot like a AR is probably going to be to high a goal. :)

It dings to bottleneck of the casing when ejected i ajst gas from min to max and of course at max casing is destroyed.

Why are you operating this rifle at maximum?

For long term life of this rifle you want the minimum gas port setting necessary to function the action.

Open the gas system one click at a time and shoot rounds until the bolt stops latching back.

Add a click back, and verify that the empty magazine latches the bolt open.

I mean this in the nicest way possible:

Please, turn off your caps lock and use paragraphs. It will both make your posts (much) easier to understand and make you look less like an overreactionary "that guy".

It also seems you don't quite understand the concept of a form email.

Many companies with a high volume of email traffic will, upon receipt of an email, generate an automatic reply to the tune of "please be patient; we will do our best to answer your questions within x working days." These aren't typed nor sent by a person.

Tactical reply

an update to my long reply, this matter has caused me to not sleep well tonight as in my messages to atlantic when i purchased it rifle in november and was charged i believe appx nov 21 in full at that time, over 961.00 or there abouts. and was told i would have a shiort wait 7-10 days, i informed atlantic this was a christmas gift for my 27 yr old son and as long as i got for christmas it was ok. well as christmas came and went. in december i contacted atlantic again just before christmas, it was at that time i received a call saying i should get before christmas or get a refund at time. so beleiving to get it in time was not the result. the ffl dealer i was using is great i use him for my gunbroker purchases, and per atlantic they have not received his paperwork he also tried to contact atlantic firearms. it was now mid january and i had not contacted atlantic firearms since december. was when i took it out prep it for my son gift. but after i saw the end results of the loose rifle i wasn't feeling to great giving him something of malfunctioning fn fal is why i put it in the safe . i did forget to say the locking pin is oper normal and has tension on the pin. but as far as accuracy forget it because of the slop in the lock down the play from front and rear sight i was unable to get any shooters acceptance as quality is concerned. my son also reads the fourm and called me wondering about this matter. saying he would want to see this fn fal. and came over last night to pick up his belated christmas gift he is going out to sample fire it today knowing the state of this rifle. i still looking to members for advise on this matter is corrected or just dump the gun as another lesson learned. by the way this was the fastest reply i received from atlantic and i did not even e-mail them.

Update,

Atlantic firearms has replied to me this afternoon and has offered me a full refund of fn fal. I studied reviews and all that I have read on the fal it is a fine combat rifle style that has proven it self, with one of its draw back is sand during desert useage in their business they stated they have only had problems with 3 other from the sales of these types of firearms. But no offer to replace this unit with another if is as Atlantic stated only 3 failures in all the sales of Fal's. I will have to think on this.... now due to the demand of this style rifle with the increased cost of the same style a refund would not cover another like model replacement:confused:

Some firearms just "kiss" cartridges when they eject them. The most notable firearm to do this is the AK, but there are a few others that do it as well. It is possible that it is actually an inherent part of the FAL's design, or an inherent part of the design of this particular ejector or charging handle, that is resulting in your bent or dented brass. In that case, it is not a defect but simply the nature of the beast.

It would help, however, if you would use something akin to proper English and grammar. Your posts are very difficult to read and make it very difficult to determine what your true problem is.

A Fixer , you are welcome to take 30 days to evaluate the rifle and the problem , if you are still having problems and not happy with it we will be glad to refund your money ship & transfer fees. We have sold tons of these rifles with no real plague of issues, a problem can reulst in any rifle line, we have had Colt rifles with issues etc , either way we will stand behind the product.

I applaud you Atlantic Firearms. That offer is more than fair and a lot more than some firearms companies would offer.

Thanks for making an honest offer to take care of A-Fixer's problem. If he does not want to work with you, then he is probably not that interested in the gun, more interested in the drama.

I suspect that he is after a lot of drama,
by the way this was the fastest reply i received from atlantic and i did not even e-mail them.

Why air your grievances in public without even trying to let the company take care of it's business?

It appears that Atlantic is trying to make it right.

What do you want them to do, pay you the difference also? That's ridiculous in my opinion,

the way that it sounds Atlantic is trying to make this good.

A-Fixer, you need to take them up on the offer. At the very least, you get your money back...best case your Son gets a dandy rifle. :)

Bent brass

Yes,
That is kind of Atlantic firearms to make the offer, abd this was not a case of drama nor lessons for my english grammer, I have repaired the issue with looseness of this rifle. and have searched other fourms in same type issues with bent brass on the fal, on most seem to be the norm consider this thread done and closed.
