New FL law requires GPS tracking of sex offenders, what do you guys think?

They shouldn't even be letting sex offenders out of prison at all in the first place

+1, with the addition of the word violent.

Looked at my local sex offender DB, and there are a few instances of public urination and two kids agewise just breaking the law. There is no reason they need to be tracked.

Nope, can't really support this. If they can be trusted in society, they are let loose. If not, they stay.

And how long will it be before someone figures out how to remove it?

i agree with the previous poster on the need to redefine what is a sex offender, we had a local boy who had consensual sex with a 15 1/2 yo girl, he was 17 at the time but she was below the age of consent therefore legally he was a child molester, she was a sophomore in HS and he was a junior, Think back guys, how many of us would have said not to our sophmore GF telling us ok.... not many. similarly there is a 18 yo boy who has had a series of convictions going back several years of fondlingand more on young 5-7 YO girls, that is a predator and he will continue, some common sense needs to be implemented in labeling what is SO behavior,

IF we have decded that a person is a sexual predator, There seems to be no cure, therefor there is no safe way to contain them they will reoffend..then do not let them out. simple

space is right. Castrastion does not solve the problem.

As well, technology does not solve the problem. There are flaws/ways to defeat GPS on House Arrest.

With the risk of sounding like a soggy liberal, there is only way way to deal with convicted offenders, prevent them. I have yet to meet a molester you did not have it happen to him.

Get the kids into therapy as long as it takes. Do follow up as long as it takes.

Castration removes the testicles. Folks who have been castrated can buy black market testosterone to function. Some times the perpertrator asks for castration as a way to avoid prision and knows the ways to get around it.

Saying you want to castrate folks is more a punishment fantasy rather than a workable solution.

Bingo. The freaks are scary intelligent when it comes to finding ways to get around the system. Hormones to get around castration, "therapy" to get around prison, special wards in prisons to stay out of gen pop, etc

Torture, while amusing, is not a valid solution. It's not legal, nor should it be. A very nice .45 FMJ projectile to the brain stem is the best solution for clear-cut cases. For some cases, it is the only solution that works. Therapy, chemicals, prison, etc are not perfect solutions. It often just teaches the freaks how to correct their mistakes.

Rape and child molestation are worse than murder. When someone is murdered, their soul is free. When someone is raped or molested, their soul is in hell for a long, long time.

As someone else said, for less clear cut cases, there needs to be room for mitigating circumstances. Manditory sentencing is a very very bad idea, and I'm not sure how it is legal. We've all heard stories of some young lad that is underage himself annoying the parents of a young lady that also underage, ends up with the boy being labeled as a sex offender. Or the common 18 year old with a 17 year old, or equivilent.

Good point ... so if you're going to tag them, you either have to put an explosive charge in a collar around their neck (not likely) or implant the tracking device under the skin ... with some way for it to kill them if they try to remove it.

I'm down wit dat. But how do you prevent the molester from removing the GPS device?

(Edit: Oops. The question was already asked. Zundfolge's solution works, but won't happen).

Simple solution, RileyMc. Implant the device into the cranium at a high speed. Say, 2300 fps.

El Tejon, you are correct. Monsters are generally made, not born.

Much like stomping out a virus, you must quarentine the freaks first. Then work on saving as many kids as possible. It's not easy. Very few shrinks are good at bringing back kids.

Convential therapy for PTSD and similiar issues has iffy success rate. Some shrinks are really good and can pull it off. (Research Dr Bruce Perry) Group therapy for people that have been through similiar experiences are a lot better. Even better success rate if whoever runs the group has been through the same experiences. With PTSD, if the victim knows the shrink hasn't been through at least a similiar experience, he or she will typically not believe the shrink nor want to work with said shrink.

It is a really wierd mindset that lets people go who shouldn't be let go, then tries to decide what to do about the fact that they have people who shouldn't have been let go, who got let gone.

:scrutiny:

All this castration and execution talk is nice and all, but is also stupid. We don't sentence child molesters to serious jail terms anyway. Middle aged men molesting single-digit-age children are serving single-digit-time, with regularity.

Here is reality: the American public doesn't care if you rape little kids. That's the truth. They'll make a big noise about how bad it is on Oprah, but when it comes to dishing out the punishment, they apparently don't think it merits very much. It's about on par with a property crime where nobody gets hurt, if you judge by the sentences handed out.

Chemical castration is still used. The freaks actually want to be chemically castrated. Because it's easy to defeat with other chemicals or hormones that are legal and not controlled substances. I agree it's a rather unintelligent sentencing for the safety of the public at large. It's like releasing a rabid dog on a leash that doesn't exist.

Execution? For those of us that believe child molestation is worse than murder, it's perfectly logical. We use the death sentence on murderers. So why wouldn't we use the death sentence on crimes worse than murder?

Indeed, you hit the nail on the head. Why are these freaks that are destroying our future generations getting such low sentences? By every sane definition and reasoning, they should be killed. Punishment for their actions, to prevent them from destroying other children, etc. Perhaps not for a first time offender, but someone that has raped over ten children... they're not going to stop. What's the body count gotta be before these monsters are stopped?

I cannot understand the low sentences. Why do we give these monsters single digit sentences when nonviolent drug users get manditory double digit sentences? Who has decided this and why has no one attempted to lengthen sentences?

Part of the problem is that the laws themselves are not specific enough.

I'll give you an example:
I used to work with a guy who was a "registered sex offender" ... he was convicted in Kansas of the crime of "Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child.". That sounds really awful, but what he did is at the age of 28 he had a consensual sexual relationship with a 15 year old girl.

Stupid, yes, and not something I'm ready to decriminalize, but in Kansas the charge of "Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child" covers his crime, plus the crime of forcing a 12 year old to touch your "business" or videotaping two children under 14 engaging in a consensual sex act or a couple of other real nasty things.

So what happens is that sentencing guidelines for men over 18 having sex with 15 year old girlfriends is what sets the guidelines for other worse offenses that are under the same classification.

Sex crime laws really need to be gone through and made much more specific. Also stupid things like public urination and "mooning" someone need to be taken off the list of "sex crimes" because when you get too many "registered sex offenders" who are guilty of petty things, you devalue the registry.

I would have to air on the side of caution with ANY manditory sentencing laws, tracking stuff. It is possible to do no "wrong", and yet commit what is legally a "sexual crime". As others have pointed out being 18 years old and sleeping with a 17year old (or say even a 16 year old) can get you in some deep doo-doo. Should these people be lumped into the sexual offender group??

On the other hand if you are messing with little kids, you should be SHOT! 22LR ammo is cheap, should only need about 50 rounds per offender. Start at the toes and work your way up from there. Oh and let the victims family do the dirty work, they could even buy the ammo. Cost savings for the tax payer = priceless. This would stop those repeat offenders, and as I see it is about the only way to stop them, other than keeping them locked up for life. Well put them in general population in a prision and their time on this earth would be limited I would think, as even hardened criminals have no second thoughts about taking out a child rapist.

We should get back on track and stick to child molesters, noting that many are murderers in the process. To me, there is a special class of offense, clearly predatory, for involving small children, prepubescent specifically.

Do those GPs units they would wear tie in to the seeker head on those "smart bombs" the Air Force is so fond of? I would be in favor of that.

Violent rapists and child molesters should be executed upon conviction of their first offense.

The idea that we can control them by tracking them is a joke. At best, these registered sex offender lists just tell us who to interogate after the crime is committed, ie; to find where the body is fter the fact.

The reason why this is so prevalent in today's society is because these people are not afraid of being caught.

Why do so few people propose this solution?

Couey did not inform the state when he moved into the girl's neighborhood in Homosassa, about 60 miles north of Tampa.

It's just so hard to believe a convicted felon would break the law!

Seriously: I believe everybody should be given a second chance. I didn't say a third chance. I didn't say a seventh chance. I didn't say a forty-nineteenth chance. I said a second chance.

Hang 'em.

I certainly don't have any evidence to back this up, so take it with a grain of salt. I have heard it said that a very large percentage of child molestors tend to simply molest children within their own family. For whatever reason, I guess a lot of families would rather simply ignore the abuse going on under their own roof than to confront such evil head on.

One type of criminal worse than a child molester.

Child molesters are low. The only thing lower is a person who falsely accuses someone of child molesting. What ever a child molester deserves, these types of garbage need ten times worse ten times as fast as the molester gets.

I know two men whose lives were totally destroyed by women making false accusations. They were cleared at great cost and the women trotted merrily off into the sunset free and unharmed ........so far.

So an 18 year old that fools around with a 13 year old gets a mandatory 25 to life? That severe of a MANDATORY sentence for a first offense isn't just.

There are likely cases where such a sentence is just, but severe mandatory sentences damage our society by removing reasonable discretion based on the circumstances.

If there is reason to believe that a person is a severe enough threat of molesting children that they must be tracked at all times, they shouldn't be released into society.

Programs where people serve part of their term under house arrest are only accessable to nonviolent criminals for a reason.

There are evil people who prey on children that should never be released into society. There are also people who do something very wrong, but can be reformed and deserve a second chance after paying a reasonable price for their crime. I would argue that no one deserves a third chance to molest a child, and second chances should be given cautiously.

If the parole board, or whoever decides such things determines that one of these criminals is extremely unlikely to ever consider harming another child, then releasing them and tracking them for a period of time (a couple years possibly) might be reasonable. However, it should be considered part of the sentence for the crime they committed.

It seems unlikely that the GPS transmitter is surgically embedded. The transmitter would need to receive GPS signals to determine a location and then transmit that location to some other form of receiver. That would take a notable amount of power, so I wouldn't expect the power source to be small enough to embed in someone. You're also dealing with significant amounts of electromatic radiation which could pose a cancer risk embedded under the skin.

I also have to question how well such a tracking system would work. GPS signals can only really be received outdoors, and even then trees alone can be enough to prevent a good signal, and being close to buildings can be enough to prevent accessing enough satalites to lock down a position.

It would be awfully hard to determine if someone were purposfully or inadvertantely blocking the signal.

Looking at this from another perspective - How does this prevent a single crime?

Say there are 5000 past molesters with tracking devices (feel free to pick your own number if you don't like this one). There won't be the money to monitor each of them continuously. Even if there was, how would I know as a monitor that the 15 foot detour from the route my guy takes every day is because of a 3 year old in her front yard?

At best they might be able to review back-up tapes and tie someone to an area at a certain time. But if you don't know who else was in the area when, so what? Maybe it'll narrow the list of suspects if and when they find a body. :banghead:

In Other News...

I think I have read, recently, that Mary Kay LeTourneau is going to marry Villi whatshisname, her pupil whom she "raped."

I believe he petitioned (successfully) the court to get the "no contact" order turned off.

I also think of Will and Ariel Durant. He was pretty old, and she one of his young students, when they married.

Not saying anybody should take advantage of somebody's youthful naivety and innocence, mind you, just that, well, some people grow up faster than others. I'm still a little kid in some ways, m'self.

What does really bother me is the increasing amount of pro-sexual propaganda aimed at little kids, both in the schools, and in children's media and clothing fashions. This is happening at the same time that the age of consent is being raised in every State. ***?

Sigh! Wish I could find a cute young gal, 45 years old, or so...
