I just got a new unfired FN .40 Hi Power in a trade. From my research I understand that the Browning branded model is more desirable. Don't ask me why because they are both the same gun made by the same company. I have not shot it yet as I still need to get ammo for it. Does anyone here have any experience with these? From what I have read you either love them or hate them. Its a beautiful pistol. Its matte black with no cosmetic issues that I can see. I hear that these are no longer imported. I don't know if thats true or not. But I am glad I got it.

Congrats on the new Hi-power! I believe you are correct that FN marked HPs are not imported anymore, however the Browning marked HPs are still imported occasionally. They are the same gun with different rollmarks. I have four HPs, one of which is the .40. I prefer the 9mm, but the .40 is nice too!

I have a Browning .40. Here it is with my Springfield 1911.

I like the BHP .40. It's true that the .40 is not the nice soft shooter that the 9mm is, but recoil is not bad at all due to the all-steel construction. This gun is good-looking, accurate, and reliable. The only problem I had was with the stock trigger, it was gritty and very heavy. I took out the mag disconnect. That smoothed out the trigger a good amount, and got the weight down to seven pounds. It is still heavier than I like, but I'm keeping it as is. I've noticed that shooting the BHP has made shooting my 1911s even easier.

Darn, you guys are making me want to go out looking for a Hi Power. But on my budget, it will have to be a clone. Any good ones out there?

True clones, no. FEG used to make a clone, but FEG went out of business several years ago. Charles Daly marketed this pistol under its own name, but that is history too. The Argentine company FM (that's FM, not FN) made true clones under license from FN for decades, then marketed their own without the license. They have stopped exporting them to the U.S. because of currency exchange difficulties (theirs, not ours).

Even used ones are pricey. And mine is going to one of my grandsons. Sorry.

Cordially, Jack

That's interesting. I'm interested in the opposite. I've got a Browning marked HP and what I'd like to match it up with an FN marked HP!

I've got two Browning HP forties, a high polished blued Standard and a Silver Chrome. They definitely make the snappy .40 feel comfortable to shoot. Great guns once you have a good trigger job done. Don Williams is the man for HP trigger jobs... you'll find him in Arizona. Friends don't let friends shoot HP's without trigger jobs. ;)
