Just got on here a few days ago. I did a lot of reloading in the 80s and 90s but got into something else and have not done much sense then. I still have all of my equipment to work with but I am not up to date on things. I have loaded .45 ACP, 9mm, 223,308, and 30 06. I just bought a S&W M&P Shield in 40 S&W and will be loading for it. My books do not even have load data for it. So my first question is where would I start, type of powder, bullet, and so on. Anything different about loading the 40?

Thanks Dannie

Suppose to be ( New here not to reloading)

If you loaded for the 45acp the 40 should not present you with any problems. There are a few new calibers and a few new powders on the market since you last reloaded, so I would recommend buying a new loading book or two. It should come back to you pretty quick.

Dannie, as lightman said, a couple of new manuals would help.

That said, pretty much any powder you was using for 9mm will work good for 40 S&W.

BTW, Remington says not to use their 1 1/2 (SP) primers for 40. They suggest their 5 1/2.
None of the other primer makers make that suggestion that I'm aware of.

New manuals are very highly recommended.
But in the mean time, the powder manufactirers have data on their websites.

Try hodgdon.com, alliantpowder.com, accuratepowder.com, wwpowder.com or imrpowder.com

This list should get you started again.

Welcome back :D

Welcome Back...

Yeah, I kind of went through the same thing..Loaded in the '70's...Got away from it most of the '80's, and back into it for the last 20 years or so.

This:http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/ is a GREAT source of load data, that is updated often (I think?? daily), that has some GREAT loads for you using Hodgdon, Winchester, and IMR powders.

Again..WELCOME BACK...Bill.;)

Dag Gone Hondo--Beat me to it..HA HA...
