Another new guy checking in

Mark from Phoenix. I stumbled onto this site while searching for info on getting my safe repaired after a break-in. Safe did its job - none of my guns were taken.

I have been on a few gun forums in the past but haven't stayed long because the members have been absolute whackos. I've been lurking here for the past few weeks and I think I'll give it a try. It is nice to see a forum where the majority of the members aren't of the "I should be able to own anything I want and carry anything I want any time and anywhere that I want and if you believe different then you are anti-gun and not welcome here". I'm all about the right to own and the right to carry. But I also believe that there is a lot of responsibility that goes with owning, and a big one is making sure your guns are secure from bad guys. Personally I think if you have guns that are not secured and someone breaks in and steals them then you should be held responsible for it.

See you around!

Hi, I'm Steve from central NJ, where I feel it's my duty to exercise my 2nd amendment rights in every way possible. Too many people in this state voting-in those who vote our rights away.

I chair two Friends of NRA committees, and act as state treasurer. I became a pistol, rifle and shotgun instructor so I could introduce others to self-defense skills and the pleasures of safe shooting. I can carry in most real "free" states, but obviously not in NJ.

I have an extensive gun collection, with a good cross-section of brands and types, but I enjoy quality handguns and battle rifles like the M1A and some AR's.

I also enjoy good cigars and good Italian and Mexican food. I hope to get to know a lot of like-minded people here.

Happy Holidays

Hello my name is Steve. I was doing some research on my next firearm purchase and I found this site. I found the conversations lively and informative so I decided to join the fray.

I live in the desert southwest of these Great United States. The wife enjoys wildlife photography therefore I'm tasked with being a trail guide, equipment porter and security when we go on our little walk abouts.

I own a .50 cal Desert Eagle, which I carry when we head for the wilderness areas. I am disappointed in the fact that after shooting less than 100 rounds through the hand cannon I've had to send it back to Magnum for repairs.

Since I'm an obsessive compulsive, when we are out in the field I must have a firearm that is both powerful and reliable therefore I am currently researching the .500 S&W Revolver. I like the idea of knowing that no matter what we may encounter when we go on a photo safari I'll have enough firepower strapped to my thigh to handle the situation should I need to.

I'd like to hear from anyone out there that owns a one of the .500 S&W. I've read the info posted by the gentleman from Missouri John Ross and while I found it informative I am asking myself if is worth the extra money to purchase one of his 500 models.

Thanks In advance

Hey dman3 -

I have not met anyone who as of yet has had enough rounds through the S&W .500 to say what kind of longevity they are having. I've only heard of a few cases where a scope/rail mounting fails and becomes a flying object.

My own experience has been shooting a few rounds through the .460Mag version, which was pretty stout and I must say very cool. I will consider getting one next spring, choosing this caliber mainly because it will also shoot the .45LC and .454 Casull, effectively giving me good, better, best versatility. I missed out on the Friends of NRA engraved version this year because I already had some other purchases in progress.

Good luck, let us know what you decide.

Hello everyone,

I'm a 19 year old student from Belgium. I am currently studying for a degree in commercial engineering. I shot my first gun when I was 16 (youngest age allowed to manipulate firearms in my country) and been doing it ever since.

Currently I own a Mauser K98k, Marlin 336W and a K31 has just been ordered.
As far as handguns go, I am currently using a HK USP45 on loan from someone, and have applied for permits for a Glock 19 and USP Expert in .40S&W (but it could take a couple of months before I get them, probably between 6-8 months).

I have come to realize that ammo has become quite expensive, so I've started reloading with the help of a friend. :)

My main language is Dutch, but there aren't that many people around who understand that, so I also learned French and English, and start to understand German.

The more I use and read about guns, the more my interest grows, currently I'm saving up to fly to AZ and visit Gunsite. So I would love to visit the US, and more than AZ too, so if you have any suggestions ...:)

I was amazed that there are a number of Europeans here too, First guy I PM'ed with lives 200km from my door :p

Kind regards,

Boris Barowski

Hi Boris, always good to hear from our European brethren! You already have some excellent weapons there, I'm a big Marlin fan, but I'm also partial to Mausers, and have long lusted for a K-31. But I'm also a hangunner, I think everyone should be proficient with all three types of firearms. I'm not much of a shotgunner, but I have a few, and practice with them when I can. I'm not familiar with the rules in European countries, I'm sure they're all different, perhaps you could enlighten us to what hoops you have to jump through in order to buy and possess weapons of Mass Entertainment. We sometimes forget just how lucky we are in the US!

Your English is very good, a lot better than my Dutch, French or German! :D I find it very impressive that you have saved up to go to Gunsite, I've never accomplished that, and it's not that far away from me. :banghead:

What kind of hunting opportunities do you have in Belgium? Do you hunt, or just like to shoot? I used to hunt a lot more, but I'm living in the city these days, and the only thing people shoot around here is each other.

I'm also curious what kind of weapons the police carry around in public. When I was a cop, our rifles and shotguns were locked up in the car. In fact, in most of the places I worked, we didn't even HAVE rifles in the cars!

Hello everyone! Mike here. I'm just now getting back into shooting after some 15 or so years. I'm a professional musician (guitarist) by trade. I'm mostly into target shooting, can plinking, and having fun with the gun. It's nice to meet everyone here, and it nice to have such a resource of info a mouse click away. Thanks for putting together such a great site.

Welcome to all the new members. Nice to see another European Boris.
I've never hunted in Belgium but I do do hunt a lot in Germany. You'll find this a good site with lots of knowledgeable people to help.

Roebuck.

I'll explain that in a seperate post/thread, it's a bit too long to post here ;)
To sum up, every handgun or semi automatic rifle takes at the moment between 6 en 12 months to get the permit, not counting the period you need to be shooting already to prove the motive of "sport shooting". Private protection isn't a legal motive.

If you start from scratch, you can buy long guns and shotguns (no pump action) on permit (see previous for waiting period) or on a sporters licence after 6 months, or once you have that licence, instantly.

Your English is very good, a lot better than my Dutch, French or German! I find it very impressive that you have saved up to go to Gunsite, I've never accomplished that, and it's not that far away from me.

the Euro/dollar rate is good now, that helps ;) flying is cheap, 400 € round trip.

I'd like to hunt, but it's a bit expensive for me as a poor college student.
First, you need a permit (200€ per year)
Then you need to rent a "part" of a hunting domain, around 300€ for a day, or between 5-7000€ for a full part, on which you can hunt 14 days per year. This is an average for a domain of 100-150 acres.

I envy the popular culture that seems to surround hunting in the US.
At the WFSA meeting in Nüremberg (I was there because I am active in the Gun rights movement, I'm sort of the assistant to one of the top representatives. I wish we had the recources of the NRA :(), I heard Antonin Scalia talk about hunting, the connecting aspect of it and how ordinary folks enjoy it as a popular pass-time.
Here it is more an activity for the elite and wealthy.

I'm also curious what kind of weapons the police carry around in public. When I was a cop, our rifles and shotguns were locked up in the car. In fact, in most of the places I worked, we didn't even HAVE rifles in the cars!

FN GPs (the Belgian made Browning HP) are currently being phased out, and most Police Zones adopt the glock 17. Some have HKs or SIGs. The tactical teams can choose, I heard many adopt the HK USP or P2000.

No rifles at all, so never rifles in cars. Shotguns, I think they have some for riot control, but they don't get out much. Also, never in a patrol car.

They had several MP5s, but over the years, many got stolen or lost and they never replaced them :scrutiny: You can still see them sometimes, when they want to impress.

Police here are not the shooters friends, they are the tool of the socialist gungrabbers.

Good Morning form Memphis, TN... Sagebrushjim here... New here, but have been a member of Surplus Rifle, Mauser Central, Gun Boards and Tennessee Gun Owners for quite a while... Avid C&R Accumulator and Handgun Hoarder...

I'm ex-service (SA) and live in Europe at the moment. Have always loved post 1800's firearms as objects, am a firm believer in people taking care of themselves and their families, and am very envious of Americans who live in States where common-sense gunlaws are still in place.

I also think the US constitution is the simplest and clearest founding document any nation could wish for itself, and hope that it will resist any modern tampering. Knowing that there's at least 1 country left where free people have options gives the rest us of hope.

I stumbled across this board a while back and have been lurking, not planning on joining. But I really liked the attitude here.

I live in Rusk County, East Texas, enjoy plinking, mostly pistol. I have a Colt Gov Mdl. 1911, 9mm Baby Eagle, and an Interarms PPK that are my favorites. I had a Rossi 357 to carry on my bike, but the little wife took it away from me.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

New guy

Hello all. I've just registered to your fine site and thus far I'm very impressed. I look foward to learning all that I can and contributing where I can; although, I'm rather green in the wonderful world of gun ownership and shooting.
I've recently acquired my CCW permit (Morgan County, Al.) and purchased a Glock 23. I haven't taken a formal saftey course, but a few of my police officer friends have taken me to the range a few times and given me the skinny...let me tell you, I love shooting.
In the near future, I'm going to get a holster that will allow me to conceal and carry the gun, but more importantly I intend to research and study ways I can advance our cause.
Thanks a million everyone,
Blake

Welcome to THR! Glad to have you here.

If I may suggest, do go to a gunstore and try a number of different holsters. Different people prefer different styles, and you need to find one that is comfortable for yourself. No point in having a CCW permit and a handgun if you don't carry it!

Welcome aboard. Just be fore-warned...at times its handy to have a bit of a thick skin, but this is a great bunch of folks and there is a lot of knowledge to drink in.

New to the site am I. Really enjoy the posts and ability to search on what's hot for reloading data as in kinds of powder to use, etc.

I just signed up today. I live in Colorado and shoot bullseye league. My parents were both competitive shooters, so my son and I are using their guns to shoot with. A High Standard 10x and Browning Buckmark... I am addicted and just want to learn all that I can from your forum.

Hi, my name is Ryan and I live in Bartlett, TN. I am 33 and have been collecting guns since I was in high school. I primarilly enjoy rifles, but I own several shotguns and handguns. My favorite rifle is my Steyr SSG. My favorite pistol is a Springfield champion .45. My Mom just got me a 10/22 as an early Christmas present and I plan on customizing it later on.
I just found this site and I like it!

Hello all! I'm new to this site, but learned alot so far. I'm not in the states right now, I miss my firearms :( . I'll be back to the states soon and will hopefully start reloading soon afterward. Shooting relaxes me and hopefully reloading will also, that and save me the money of not having to see a shrink.
