I bought a mossberg 500a at Bi-mart here in Oregon. Its the one that comes with the two barrels. An 18.5" and a longer one for game. (pics later) I think its the same one they sell at big 5. Anybody know anything about an issue regarding the slide tube thing and the fore grip? I hear the pins pop out and leave you with a non-functional shotgun? Any info would be great. Like if this issue was resolved or if there is something I need to do to fix it. Thanks.

Well, I myself also have a 500a (I believe the a means 12 guage).
Mine is not real old, I would also like to know what issues there are.
I think I will look on the Mossberg site right NOW!:uhoh:

No, NOTHING about barrels, magazine tubes, pins, etc. NOTHING.

the 500a is a great gun you shouldnt run into many problems with this gun. maybe the cheap crappy safety will break, then you just buy a new metal one like i did,but i didnt let my plastic one break in the first place, i just went a head and put the metal one in anyway.

All new Mossberg synthetic shotguns have the slide action rails molded into the forearm. I bought a new 835 the other day without knowing this, took it home and noticed that the forearm was cracked on the inside. Thankfully the dealer let me return it without question and I bought a like new used one that has the original forearm and metal action tube. I don't see Mossberg keeping this design very long. If you drop your gun in the field and crack the forearm you could be out of a functional gun. The wood stocked and 590 models still use the metal action slide tube.

Direct riveted has been around since the early 90's. Never had a problem. What I find really strange is how the "problem" seems to only have started happening recently since so many new folks have been buying Mossy's. Either the gun has changed or the people have.

All of my Mossbergs are the older model with the all metal action assembly, but I have seen the newer model that has the action bars riveted to the forearm.

The newer model action looked flimsy and the most likely item to break. New all metal action assemblies can be ordered through Mossberg, although the normal factory forearm is shorter internally and actually longer externally (the more squared forearm) using the short action assembly, that limits you to the 4 round sidesaddle or cutting about an inch off to fit a 6 round sidesaddle.

The long action assembly is used for the "corn cobb" style forearms that need no modification to use the 6 round sidesaddle.

Yes, I also changed out the plastic one with a nice high metal one!
You can really feel this one, even with winter gloves on!

i got my 500A a few years back and have loved it since day one. it came with a 28inch vented and ribbed barrel with the removable chokes. i picked up a Maverick 88 barrel through this web site from another member who cut it down to 20 inches.

honestly it is the first long gun i grab when going out shooting on our property. its just so much fun with the 28inch barrel blasting clay piegons, then toss on the 20inch and explode some watermelons/pumpkins.
