Not sure how long they've been out there but Savage has introduced the "Savage Edge" series of rifles:

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/edge

There's a few different camo options and a pretty good variety of chamberings, and with a MSRP of $329, the street price looks to be under $300. (There's one on Gunbroker right now for $275.)

Although I am probably not interested in one of these rifles as a whole, I do wonder about the action and if it's a standard Savage action and barrel nut that will allow some custom builds.

Does anyone have any insight into this rifle?

I bought the 111FCXP3 Package series for about $400 about three years ago and thought that was a good deal for a quality gun. The MSRP for the same package is $519 versus $379 for the Edge XP which is also scoped. I can't really think where they could cut any more corners to save that kind of money. I see it has a matte finish instead of bluing. Is bluing a $140 feature?

I don't understand what the big deal is with that style of a receiver. Remington has one now (770), Browning (X-bolt). Compared to their regular bolts the 770 and the x-bolt are no where as smooth and certainly do not have that super nice finished look. They're cheap because they're cheap in my opinion. Can't say about the Savage variety, but I'm guessing it's more of the same. Cheap is as cheap does.

looks like it uses the old style trigger... and why the detachable box magazine on a budget gun? wouldnt a regular blind magazine be alot cheaper?

I doubt the blind mag costs any different, or at least not much. The magazine system for the newer Savage models uses the same magazine body be it a blind mag or a detachable. It is also another area for them to make up any decreased profits.

To my eye the Edge is significantly diffrent.

The receiver appears to be a closed tube much like a rem710

The rear of the bolt around the handle, rear baffle is quite different as well

I'm betting it's a stevens 200 in a cheaper stock (if possible) with many machining steps eliminated particularly as they relate to the receiver

Yes the receiver certainly appears different. It isn't a standard 10/110 like the Stevens 200. They may be very similar and have just removed/changed a few manufacturing steps to reduce cost, but it is a bit different. It will be interesting to see what Savage does with the Stevens line. I personally see them being dropped completely and this is only one step closer to that. I saw the Stevens 200 as a way to keep using the old process without new R&D. If new R&D has found a cheaper way to make rifles, I can't see a more expensive budget rifle staying around. Who knows though. The stock on the edge looks completely new to the Savage/Stevens line. I had heard multiple times that the tupperware stocks Savage makes cost about $10 to make. Hard to believe they can get cheaper than that.

I hope they go back to the 3 screw trigger. It was much better than the 2 screw they use on the Stevens. That change alone would keep the Stevens/Savage bottom budget line as the pick for me in the >$300 rifle range.

I guess you'll be disappointed to learn that the latest steven's 200's don't even have a 2 screw trigger. yep that's right we now have a stevens200 one screw trigger.

I have the BTCSS in .223 with a Millet LRS-1 Scope. I can easily get .687" CTC at 200 yards. It's the first NEW rifle I have ever owned and I don't regret buying it for one second. In fact I'd like to get one in .308 too. The only thing I did to it was to put real pillars in, glass bed it and replace the recoil lug with a precision ground one. Not because it needed it, I just felt better having it.

On my 2 screw Stevens, I only adjust the screw for trigger pull weight anyway. Which screw they keep now?

the number of screws refer to the trigger itself

the three screw trigger had a sear, overtravel and safety adjuster

the two screw unit lost the adjustment for sear engagement

the new Stevens trigger loses the overtravel stop screw as well

the pull adjustment isn't on the trigger but is on the frame via the trigger return spring seat

I don't know what to say about them. I'm hoping they are much better rifles than the 770.
I just ordered 11 of them for the shop, hope to see them by summer. Then I will post an opinion based on visual inspection, I'm sure someone will let me shoot theirs at the range.

I got a model 93 22mag back in October and it has been the worst rifle I've owned. I'm working on it and will probably get it ironed out, but wow, what an out-of-the-box flaming turd. Apparently theres no QA at all.

To think I sold good Mosin Nagant for a lefty bolt turned clunker... :banghead:

urp... a little throw up in the mouth there.... I hope they are okay, but man, this looks as cheezy as the remmy 770's, and that is saying something.
maybe shoulda put this stock, on the stevens...

just another entry level rifle, every manufacture is trying to squish low-end of population to get their profits up, I would expect higher spec tolerances, currently 11 model has 1.75 MOA in their specs, this one could breach 2 MOA, could be the barrels which didn't fit specs for 11 models, the action and bolt design are different, just hope they not soldered...

Same here, lately Savage has been a good, solid performer...but this looks like a big step backerds to me. I'd take a Stevens or a Marlin over it hands down. To save face the Edge should be cut from the lineup. :D

Not a Stevens ... here's some info from a knowledgeable guy on SS:

No the Edge is radically different. The Stevens $200 has a MSRP of $446, so if you take that in consideration the Edge is much cheaper. (At a MSRP $329) These are Suggested prices, not what you will find in a retail store.

From my conversations with the people at Savage the Edge, is Savages answer for Remington's model 770. (They kind of look a like) Savage designed the Edge do to Remington dropping the price on their rifles below what Savage can compete with with the Stevens 200. Savage wanted to make a high quality rifle at a lower cost, and this was the Edge. The Edge is marketed for the younger newer shooter.

The edge is a radical design, with a new style of receiver using newer technology, that should produce a higher quality product. The receiver is modeled off of the target actions. The tang is removed, due to the high amount of machining cost. It has a side safety, and no rear baffle. The detachable magazine is completely different. The stock is made by a new process. The edge will still use a floating bolt head, and the same button rifled barrels as the Savage line. The have it chambered in a ton of calibers 223, 22/250, 243, 7mm08, 308, 25-06, 270, and 30-06.

...and it gets worse...

They plan to ax the Stevens line in favor of the new Edge. A suicidal move IMO. Looks like Savage is taking steps to become the next Remington. behead.gif
