Hey guys, I was just at the gun store oogling the super redhawk, when I happened to see a security six for $450 NEW!. It is unfired, has the original box, etc. Even the yellow piece of plastic to cover the cylinder. I thought it was pretty cool. They guy told me why it was considered new still, but i was too distracted. What do you guys think, and what would you do?

About six months ago I picked up one in top shape with 2&3/4" barrel and adjustable rear sight. The black/yellow box was also mint and sale price was $399. I owned it for two or three weeks before moving on to Smith & Wesson. The $450 is reasonable price for one. Having had one I would say pass on it.

I think they are awesome guns, and although that may be a tad high for a Security Six (Just a tad), I would say it is an excellent price for what you get. IMHO at least.

Well, think of it like this. What comparable revolver could you get brand new for $450?

Taurus makes a mid-frame .357 you could get for $450 or perhaps less.
For a S&W you're looking at $600+ for an L frame .357.
Ruger, you could get the GP100 for around $500.

I'd say if you are shopping a brand new mid frame .357, that Sec. Six is the best deal you're going to get. To get a lower price, you have to get a Taurus. I don't have any personal experience with Taurus revolvers, but based on experience of others, I'd go with the Ruger over Taurus any day. I'd also go with the Security Six over the GP100.

I paid $350 for one and really like it. I'd offer $400 for a brand new one... $400 would be a fair price. Not a deal other than it's brand new never fired.

If it's stainless, it may be a good deal. I absolutely love mine, I've had it for over 30 years, and it's still my favorite.

Here's a pic:

They're shooters!

I would give him $500 dollars for it,if its stainless. Unless I could sucker him on a straight across trade for 2 GP100s.

Pablo....I have no complaints with mine, what didn't you like about yours?
I never warmed up to it. Most likely it was the weight. I sold it and picked up S&W 457 which was nixed for S&W 37-2. My newest piece is S&W 12-2 which I really like. I think this one will be mine for quite a while.

I paid something similar for one in similar condition. It is my only .357, and I chose it over an excellent condition S&W M19 due to the Ruger's known durability with magnum loads. Here is some 25 yard accuracy from a Ruger Security Six, 4" barrel with magnum loads. I'm guessing the low hits are my fault.

My Dad paid $200 for his new in the box in 1779.

Once you factor in inflation that sounds like a fair price for it in 2011 dollars.

When inflation is factored in, $450 in today's money is a lot less than the $225 I paid in 1981 dollars.

I ran across the exact same deal last year on this NIB 2-3/4" Security Six and I went for it. I already had the 4" and had seen the prices on them going up over the last couple of years. As previously stated, there's not many choices out there for a reliable NIB stainless steel mid frame 357 for $450. The one thing I didnt like on both of mine was the skinny neck on the grip. I added the Tyler T to the 2-3/4" to fill the grip and I changed the grips on the 4" out to full size walnut grips.

I doubt you will get many nay sayers on a gun forum unless the deal is horrible. If you want to hear "don't buy it!" your gonna have to email this question to " the view".

Otherwise buy it and treat it to a wonderful life with a steady diet of lead.

Ruger sixes were great until I bought a 19 snub Had all three of the sixes in SS snub now there all gone and I don't miss them although if I was shooting five or six hundred rounds a month out of a gun I would have kept one.

After having timing issues on Model 19's and 66's, and having a forcing cone crack on another K-frame (common to heavy use in K-frames), I though the Security Six would be better for my needs. A S&W K-frame will wear more quickly and have issues more often than a Ruger SS. Smiths are beautifully crafted guns, and I carried one daily for five years (on duty), but it only saw about 1000 rounds in those five years, as I regularly shot my own guns, and only practiced and qualified occasionally with the duty 19.
