My FIL just gave me a RIA 1903 out of the blue yesterday that has been in the family for 4 generations (I'm the 4th). Its a 411k serial number range RIA and was re barreled in '44 by Springfield. The bore is very nice and the bolt is stamped "NS" so I'll be using this bad boy as a alternate to my k-31 this mule deer season. The only crappy thing about this rifle is that the stock and hand guard have been chopped (by my wife's great grand dad) but otherwise the rifle was left original with no other bubba mods. Good day for me.

The good news is that it's a "high number" rifle which is considered safe. I would check the headspace, though.

If it were mine I would look for a stock, handguard, and associated hardware to restore it to original condition. These parts are available.

I've been looking for the stock and hand guard set with as much metal parts as I can get. You have any suggestions besides gunbroker?

From your FIL get as much history as you can get....and wright it down....These family stories are things that are getting lost with each passing of a generation.

Some day you will pass it on to your little one and they will (hopefully) treasure it as you and your wifes family has.

Believe it or not, ebay is a good source. There are several stock sets on there right now. From a quick glance, it appears that you would have to pay about $200 to get a good one. (One thing I like about ebay is the pictures. You see exactly what you're getting.)

Research the rifle and make sure you buy the correct type of stock and markings. A real USGI stock can get costly. If you are going to drop the coin on the stock get the correct one. Since the gun was most likely refurbished several times in it's life it might be easy to come up with one.

I picked up a repro 1903 C-stock and handguard for Sarco a couple of years ago for a pawn-shop 1903 that sounds similar to yours. The C-stock isn't correct for the rifle, but my right wrist likes it much better. They had NOS hardware kits at the time also.
