This is my first post here. Ever since 1964 the Riflemans Rifle has been produced using a lot of manufacturing short cuts making the pre 64 rifles all the more desirable. Prior to the New Haven plant shutting down FN acquired the company and the quality of their Model 70s has improved a lot. The FN produced Winchesters are once again superb quality firearms and the new Model 70 showcases that quality. The receivers and barrels are produced in FNs North Carolina factory then sent to their factory in Portugal for finishing and assembly. When I first saw this Super Grade I couldn't resist buying it. I was going to buy on in 30-06 but since I've never owned a 270 I bought this one in that inconic Winchester caliber. A nice rifle like this deserves a decent optic so I thought this Swarovski Z3 appropriate. DSC07459.JPG DSC07466.JPG DSC07468.JPG DSC07454.JPG

Wow thats pretty, I'm not mature enough for a rifle like that :) hows it shoot? hope we see a range report. congrats on the model 70.

Awesome looking rifle and scope. The Z3 is excellent. I love the flame maple stocks on those rifles.

They are a limited run factory model and listed on the Winchester website.

Beautiful rifle. I have three Win 70s...two EWs (in .30-06 Sprg and 7mm Rem Mag) and a Grade III walnut-stocked 7x57. All are SC-manufactured Fns and all are both very well finished and excellent shooters that produce sub- 1MOA groups with quality factory ammo and 0.6-0.75 MOA with tailored handloads. I have been toying with the idea of another in .270 Win or a Featherweight in .280 Rem. They are, in my opinion, the nicest rifle at their price point, made in the USA. The controlled round feed action is a pleasure for hunting and the high grade rifles are eye candy to boot. Well done, sir.

Cheers,

Harry

PS- nice choice of a Swarovski scope. I have 3.-10x40 Zeiss Conquests with Rapid Z800s on my EWs and a very nice Leupy 2-1/2-8x36 on my 7x57. For my next, I may try a Swarovski too.

never heard of Winchester using maple stocks. Are you sure that's the way it came from the factory?
Several makers have been doing limited runs with maple stocks as of late. Winchester, Browning, CZ, Remington, etc.. I've had the hots for the Browning X-bolt with maple stock and octagon barrel.

My LGS showed me one of these the other day. Unfortuneatly, he is keeping it for himself...
extremely nice rifle, to put it mildly.

I have yet had this Model 70 to the range but hopefully the weather will warm enough to do so in the coming weeks. In the mean time I've been buying different 270 loads to see which my rifle likes best. Here are a few more photos. The unique property of the maple stock is that the grain looks different with every angle or lighting it's exposed to. This is the beauty of maple IMO. I too have a FN deluxe .458 with iron sights sans the Maple stock. Probably missed it but haven't seen a factory American sporter with a Maple stock for 40-50 years. Winchester obviously stained the checkering. No doubt for some contrast. My eyes haven't figured out if they like that or not.
