New Years Resolution Rimfire Match:

Thanks. The excellent peep sights on the MAS help a lot...I plan to try again. I thought it was funny that I scored as well with irons as I did with a scope!

Well I tried it again today with 4 power scopes on a Marlin 39A and a Mauser sporter. I know that Mauser can prune branches off a tree at 50 yards, but the crosshairs on my cheap Bushnell scope covered up the ENTIRE circles, I just could not get any consistent aiming point like that. If I slapped a 3-9 scope on it I bet I could do much better.

Man I wish I had taken the CZ 452 back today, I know I could have gotten at least a 50+ score after some practice.

HOOfan_1, with a nice clear optic you can adjust the windage and elevation to "frame" the circle (putting it in the upper/right, lower/left, et cetera of the reticle). I have an older Bushnell fixed-4 and it has been a pretty decent scope.

:)

HOOFAN, where's pic of your target? ;) I wanted to shoot yesterday, but it was really windy over here. The news said there were gusts up to 80mph in the hills!

Good shooting guys, I'm having withdraws . Havent been to the range in months. Its 2 degrees this morning and 6 inches of snow since yesterday with wind. Its cooooold. Good luck you guys

Finally got to the range this morning. Took the Savage Mark II (.17 Mach 2) with the BSA Sweet 17 4-12X40 scope on it. Set to 12 power, I could just see a bit of white around the center of the crosshairs. Shot 50 rounds at a standard zeroing target to get it hitting as close to the center of the hairs as I could. First match target was a 63. Shot 5 more targets and the closest I was able to come was a 61, so the 63 is posted here as my entry. Love that target! Makes you earn every point and prove that you can shoot, move the rifle and shoot again 15 times! Way more challenging than just bullseye for groups! Thanks Mav, best match challenge since the candle flames. Oh yes, optics, 50 yards, sandbag front rest and a squeezable sand sock under the rear of the stock. Bottom row was the first magazine, middle the 2nd and the top one the last. First 5 were right on and got steadily worse from there - :banghead: Shot each row from left to right and rows from bottom to top. The rifle is capable of a perfect score on this target, but I don't think I am :D

Hoofan, I should have left my target up today too. Didn't know what the heck was going on with me or the gun! I only scored a 12 with a 10-22 and cheap American Eagle ammo. Looks like I'm a lock for last place. :D

Jim, that's mighty impressive shooting! :what:

ARGH! Foiled again by Jim. :) Guess I'll have to bring some more targets with me next week and see if I can do better.

<mumbles> nice shootin'

KSCCHTrainer, that is some outstanding shooting! Glad you like the target...apparently likes you too! I like to keep it challenging, whilst possible (which is harder than one might believe), but it seems to push the limit a bit further.

9X23WIN, we all have an off day (or sometimes a complete month), but if I had to bet i'd say that the ammo is likely the culprit (my experience with 10/22s has shown that even in stock config. they are often capable of outshooting the operator). FWIW, none of the bulk stuff (including the Win. Auto Match, which is a disgrace) has ever done notably well for me. All else fails bring the daughter (then everyone will hate you :p).

Jim,

That is excellent shooting. I was thinking of a Savage MkII in .22, do you like this rifle?....seems to shoot straight!

Does it have the Accutrigger?

Virg,
It's an older Mark II before the accutrigger. I rescued it from a guy's gun safe where it was just wasting away. It's a left hand action (I am left handed) with the heavy barrel and the first left hand gun I've ever owned. I wound up having to do a serious trigger job on it. Pull was over 8 lbs when I got it. Now it's down to 2.5 and it breaks like glass. All it took was a little polishing and a couple of .025" thick brass shims. (Found the technique over on RimfireCentral.com in the Savage forum.)

I imagine if it had the accutrigger it wouldn't have been the safe queen it was, but that 8lb trigger certainly made it a beast to shoot accurately. It already had that BSA Sweet-17 Mach2 scope on it when I got it.

All I had to do was clean up a little surface rust and fix the trigger pull. I do believe it's become my "go-to" rimfire. I'd like to have one just like it in .22LR, but chances of finding one around here for a decent price are pretty slim. This one has a real nice wood stock. I've had a Savage .308 (model 10FP) with the accutrigger and a synthetic stock. Didn't like the stock at all, it had far too much flex and had an internal blind magazine. They may now, but at the time I had it, nobody made an aftermarket stock for it so I got rid of it. I didn't like the stock and that little "Glock" type safety dingus in the trigger ruined the feel for me. Guess I'm just old fashioned, I like a flat trigger shoe (grooves are OK but that's all)

Virg461; I mostly agree with Jim's assessment. The Savage Mk. II (as well as the very similar models: 93 & 93R17) is a great gun for the money. I believe that the biggest drawback is the stock, Savage composite stocks are lackluster at best (throughout their lineup), the AccuStock (not available in rimfire rifles) models are a bit better, but still not great and not worth the additional coin IMO. Another drawback is the difficult to load magazine (most notably in their rimfire rifles, but also in the single stack centerfire rifles to a lesser extent).

OTOH, I do rather like the AccuTrigger, and as a whole I consider it to be a good deal for a pretty nice bolt rifle. In fact I am interested in purchasing a 93R17 TR or TRR-SR myself (mostly due to the much nicer stock).

:)

This match ends at the end of the month; but no worries we have a new one every month (even May!), so join us when you can. We have had a hard winter here too, but with any luck it'll start to warm up before long.

:)

Well I went back out with the CZ 452 that I gave my dad and the 3-9 Centerpoint scope and restored my faith in my ability to shoot.

still the cheap CCI Blazer ammo ($2.50 for 50 at LGS) I would love to see what this gun would do with Lapua or Eley match ammo.

Temperature ranged from 30F-38F over the time I was shooting. Slight breeze, maybe 10 MPH Only had enough ammo along to shoot 4 targets...or else I know I could have bested my last score.

Target 1 5s-4 3s-1 1s-9 0s-1 Total Score-32

Target 2 5s-1 3s-7 1s-5 0s-2 Total Score-31

Target 3 5s-1 3s-6 1s-5 0s-3 Total Score-28

Target 4 5s-3 3s-5 1s-3 0s-4 Total Score-33

seems kind of weird to me that the target where I missed the circle all together is also the target which scored the highest. Yet still my first shots from that rifle are my highest score.

Well, I went back to the range last night to see if my new scope would help me beat a 63. No luck there (although I do like the new scope). That is some mighty nice shooting Jim.

Mav, can I suggest that we post the rifles used next to everyone's name in the summary at the end of the month? Might be interesting to see that information put in one place.

Sure can; while the man is more important than the machine, that would provide some objective information. It might help folks decide on a new rifle by seeing what is performing the best.

:)

Just under the wire here. I actually shot this the first weekend of January, either the 8th or 9th, but I'm just now getting around to uploading. My usual setup with decent conditions. I think it was around 50 degrees and calm:

Gun: Ruger 10/22, target model K10/22-T
Optics: Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire EFR scope @ 9x power
Distance: 50 yards
Position: prone using range bag for front rest
Ammo: back to Wolf Match Extra

I've got this scored as a 36. It doesn't look like I'll be competing for the crown this month but it was fun.

Another last minute entry. A pat on the back to Mav for keeping this going.

Shot with a CZ 452, SK standard plus ammo Weaver 3-9 scope, sandbags on a bench, 50 yds.

I score this as a 46 (5x).

Looking forward to improving next month!

My apologies for abandoning you guys; I have been unable to connect to THR over the past few days (it loads the banner, but hangs before loading everything else...still horribly sloooow).

I wasn't able to do that well this month (gonna blame that on the target rifle needing parts), but did manage to take my ye olde Stevens 87D, equipped with irons and bulk ammo (see attachment below).

There is still a little while left, so keep the targets coming if you had a chance to shoot this one.

:)
