New York .50 Ban/Turn-In?

they sure are, but I submit that they all have a hunting purpose, unlike what was stated in the beging on the Assembly site.

So how can I, an out of state person help defeat this? can I email any one? Will it help?

The intro implies semi-automatics *, but the expanded definition looks like it can be interpreted to mean other rifles as well. Thanks for your support :D, I am not sure if it would help to email our state reps, but if you have any friends in NY that might be concerned about this it might help to inform them as well. I mean I came across these forums by accident this morning, signed up, and saw this bill here.. I never heard of it before!

*
Code:
[I]("50-caliber or larger weapons having the
3 capacity for rapidly discharging ammunition")[/I]
.

It's apathy that really gets me, the whole "I can't see any useful purpose for this so I don't really care if it gets banned". I firmly believe that when you fight for freedom, you fight for everyone's freedoms. If anyone here has more experience with dealing with congressmen and women please post your insight, I would like to do all I can.

wait what?

how did that happen and when will this bill be appearing before the senate?

what are the chances of this crap actually passing, i mean it seems (unhighroadly word) to me...

These guys are real smart.

Can't even get the year correct on the press release........

I'm sure this will be seen in SCOTUS if it passes and becomes law.

Note the law, if it's at a licensed dealer (which include gunsmiths) at the end of the 30 day period it's doomed.

Might just have to ship it to Barret before the 30 days. Then just take a little vacation to Nashville, TN (~30 mi from Murfreesboro) for a pick-up. Ronnie Barret would probably do it if it's legal, just to get around the unjust law. Heck, he's the only manufacturer that has refused gov't contracts because of new laws. He'd probably do everything he could to help his customers. But this wouldn't help other .50 cal centerfires.

Confiscation/Registration schemes seem to go hand-in-hand with "gee I lost it in a boating accident...go ahead and search my property...it's not here". Can't confiscate what can't be found.

Does anyone know of a website that has info about what is going on with our NYS gun laws, and how to track current bills like this one? Because is seems that if we don't keep informed and let our politicians know that we will use our "vote", they will keep infringing on our 2A here in NY state.

Fifty Caliber shooters organization!!! I'm sure hope that everyone that owns a 50 BMG rifle/pistol or whatever is a member!!!

The only way to support gun owners and fight legislation is to ban together!!!

We either hang together or surely hang separately!!!

I wouldn't be suprised if a sharp increase in shovel sales followed the passage of this law. Of course, do everything you can to keep it from happening.

Which is why several places have passed laws that require immediate reporting of any firearm lost or stolen within a period of time. Such as within 24, 48, or 72 hours of the loss.
Failure to do so is a crime itself.
Reporting it lost or stolen if it was not really lost is filing a false police report which can be a crime subject to more severe punishments than the crime of failing to report itself. If ever found to have still been in your possession or the actual whereabouts known to you sometime in the future multiple charges will be leveled.

According to this anti gun website:
http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/local/lost-stolen.shtml

Seven states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Rhode Island) and the District of Columbia currently require the reporting of lost and stolen guns to law enforcement.

A growing number of other states and local governments are working to pass similar laws.

Sure, i guess folks could hide 'em or bury 'em or lose 'em. But seriously, to what end? You could do the same with the machine guns after the '34 prohibition, I guess--but your country is changing around you. Eventually those hidden guns will be really truly lost or rusted away or found and some jail time handed out.

But your kids and grandkids, the future generations of Americans--where does that leave them. I don't mean to be rude and I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think that's a really ..... way of thinking.

Like the old saying goes.... If it's time to bury them it's time to dig them up.

Fight this to the end and if it still passes, take your guns and tax money to another state.

Zoogster,

Even in states that have laws to report stolen firearms, it would work out. You tell me how they are going to prove your report wrong, when they come knocking on your door and you say "gee, you know what? I left my door wide open last night and all my guns on the kitchen table. When I woke up, they were all gone...go figure! Of course since the door was wide open, there's no evidence of a forceful entry. Oh, also, since that was last night, I still have time to go file my report. You're welcome to take a look around. Thanks for stoping by guys!"

this makes me sick.

If you look at the amendment, the idea is we own guns to provide a 'fertile garden' of skilled shooters and ready marksmen, which in a time of need can be called up, so ALL guns are legitemate.

But taken one step further, if a foreign power would ever invade, a large criminal organization form within the country, or our own corrupt leadership do something like refuse to step down after loosing an election and possess the backing of police/military...

then the 50 BMG type rifles are the most effective tool we currently legally possess to utilize the skills of marksmanship the 2nd is intended to preserve.

you learn on a Ruger 10/22, you apply those principles at long distance with a Barrett M82

Help us build up www.nyshooters.net. It's a slow process but we're trying to get enough people in the there to have a big NY firearms issues website. I don't know enough because I'm not there yet but trying at very least to get some discussion going.

"3. WITHIN THIRTY DAYS OF THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SECTION, ANY PERSON, INCLUDING A LICENSED FIREARM DEALER, WHO HAS IN HIS OR HER LEGAL POSSESSION A USED 50-CALIBER WEAPON SHALL PERSONALLY DELIVER SUCH WEAPON TO THE DIVISION OF STATE POLICE, AND UPON TRANSFERRING OWNERSHIP AND POSSESSION TO A DULY DESIGNATED OFFICER THEREOF, SHALL BE ENTITLED TO RECEIVE PAYMENT IN AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO THE FAIR MARKET VALUE OF SUCH WEAPON, BUT NOT TO EXCEED EIGHT THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS."

Looks to me like you can keep it so long as you never shoot it.

are these guns already registered by law in NY?

No - there is no registration for long arms of any type in New York, just handguns.

EDIT: And I'm pretty sure everyone is just poking fun, but if you think that NY State would allow you to keep an "unused" .50 caliber gun if this bill were to pass, I think you need to spend a little more time learning about NY and its firearms policies. :neener: The obvious point of the bill is to remove .50 caliber weapons from civilian hands - you can be pretty much guaranteed that any court taking up a case like that would rule that the intent of the law is clear.

New York .50 Ban/Turn-in

Why would anyone want to live in some state and pay taxes to that state, where the government of that states would violate your GOD GIVEN RIGHTS as a FREEMAN?

The answer...MOVE ! Particularly NOW! 2010 is a census year. That census will decide the reaportionment of Congressional Districts. Change your state of residence, gedt a new driver's license, and reregister to vote.

If you are a NY resident, NH is not that far away. Here in FL we have NO STATE INCOME TAX, also FL is firearms owner friendly.

I use to live in NJ. I found the state so unfriendly to gun owners I moved to PA and drove 70 miles each way to work for 21 years. Gun owners pay millions and millions to states in the way of hunting licenses each year. Tell them to go to hell! If they don't support you, why should you pay their salary?

MOVE ! MOVE NOW ! And write a letter to the editor TELLING THEM WHY YOU ARE MOVING !

What is the NY state definition of "used"?

All guns are fired at least once, for the sample shell casing that's required in NY.

So, all guns are "used" in some way in NY state.
