New York City wants to be its own state. A bill is being introduced into the city council to secede from the rest of New York State, I am hoping it happens. Yes it will put two senate seats in the liberal Dem column but New York State will then elect conservative Republicans. A nice tradeoff if you ask me.
 
Can't we just give it back to the indians? Not worth it for $24.

New York keeps electing liberal republicans! I would sooner let New Orleans leave Lousiana to become a state. Liberal Democrats from Louisiana are more conservative than moderate republicans from New York. Wait 'til you meet the guys Louisiana would send to the senate without New Orleans. Dave Vitter, Bob Livingston, Richard Baker are prospective senators. They would be the liberals in the race, beating David Duke and Woody Jenkins!

Texas should be 4-6 states with 8-12 senators!

If New York City did cecede would the rest of the Union have to accept it into the United States as another state??

Would it be automatic or would there need to be a vote (and who votes on it?)
 
Since the U.N. is already there, let them take it over- they can turn it into (more of) a stinking third world country run by Communists or other despotic tyrants, of which alot of the rest of the world and certainly the U.N. seems to be so fond.:rolleyes:
 
All well & good to say "let 'em go," but are you really prepared to lose 12 of your 29 House seats? That pretty much turns Upstate NY into another Ohio. (Nothin' against Ohio... just making the comparison.)

There again, an argument could be made for a split on the basis of "irreconcilable differences." West Virginia divorced itself from Virginia that way. 'Course the surrounding circumstances were a tad different.

Keith, I'm pretty sure there'd have to be a vote. Statehood has to be applied for and ratified. But NYC might have a good case. It's only got 1/3 the land area of Rhode Island, but it's got 8X the population.
 
Oh how I can dream...

New York City can secede and then tax themselves out of existence. More businesses will move out to join the rest of America.

If New York City were to secede, I'd bet it would only be a matter of time before Staten Island asked to join us :)

Desperate times, it is said, call for desperate measures.
Perhaps that's how best to explain why City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens) is proposing that the cash-strapped city secede from New York and become the 51st state.

"We send Albany $3.5 billion more than we receive back," Vallone said. "The state has treated us like an unwanted orphan for too long. It may be time for us to move out."

He plans to introduce a bill that would ask city voters whether they want a commission to study secession. If they agree, the commission will hold hearings and draft a proposal. Then voters would get one more shot at the secession question before it can move to state legislators.

If it passed muster before the Legislature, it would go to Congress.

Vallone even has a name ready: Greater New York.

"That is an idea not worthy of comment," said Joe Conway, a spokesman for Gov. Pataki.

"It sounds extreme, unrealistic and unlikely," said Ed Skyler, Mayor Bloomberg's press secretary.

One local legislator says the idea should be explored, considering how poorly the city is faring in Albany these days.

"The last straw was the governor's new proposed budget," said City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens).

Vallone said he'll be proposing a ballot initiative this year to form a commission to study the issue for two years, at which point it would have to go before the state Legislature. While it's hard to believe Albany would approve any secession proposal, Vallone pointed out that the timing could work in favor of a split.

"If there's a gubernatorial election going on, it may very well hinge on the candidates' position on this issue," he said.

Vallone said that, by his calculations, Albany sucks $3.4 billion a year from the city.

Won't ever happen. It'll screw up our beatiful 50-star flag. Puerto Rico would have already been a state by now if not.

I am not so sure about that. Making PR a state would dethrone MS from their claim of "poorest state in the union". That, and there are still people who divided (both here on the mainland and on PR) on the issue.

It's not Constitutional. New states may not be formed from the area of existing states. WV got away of it, cause the early 1860's were interesting times.
 
PR isnt a state because the people there dont want to be a state. If they were, and thus citizens, they'd be paying taxes. As it is they get most all of the benefits and none of the BS.
 
I moved out of upstate New York because of that big parasite called NYC. It will never become its own state, but I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea if it was.

Art. IV, Sect. 3:
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

Just an FYI ;)
