Newbie wants guns

Hi guys,

This is my first posting. I don't have a gun yet, but I'm anxious to get a few. I think this might be the place to hook up

A little info about me. I had a .22 semi when I was a kid (healthy, normal American family). Haven't had one since then, but I've got the hankerin' now.

I'd like to buy two, and hopefully, someone on this forum has a couple to sell.

I'd like an AK for home defense (and for basic freedom principles), and I'd like a suitable pig gun to help rid Texas of it feral hogs and to barbeque. I think I'd like a semi for the pig gun, definitely with a scope.

I'd pay the going price, and I want to buy immediately.

Welcome! AK not so good for home defense, unless you don't have any one else living with you or any neighbors close by. Great for freedom principles though.

Shotgun will normally be the best for the home, and you'll be more than able to get a pig with a slug.

I live in safe neighborhood (or so I think), so the odd of my principles being infringed upon are probably far greater than my home being compromised. Besides, people who hate guns especially hate AK’s, so there’s some satisfaction there as well.
I really can afford two guns, I think, but it’d be nice to have the same ammo for both. So I’m not averse to an AR type gun and pig gun (.223). So what would you recommend being an expert?

Being that you are in Austin...

If you need an FFL transfer, check with SAM at Action Pawn on 183 near Cedar Park. He has very low transfer rates. I have worked with him several times and he is definitely good people.

.223 wouldn't be my choice for hogs. Sorta "general principles", but I'd think more highly of something like a .30-30 or a .308...

That's what some others have said as well; that the 308 might be a better choice. Decisions, decisions. The more I read on the forum, the more convinced I am that everyone is right. Not too many fence straddlers when gun talk is concerned.

I just find it ironic, as a russian american that you want an AK for excercise of freedoms. hehe. Get an AR-15... do americans proud, and leave the ak's to me, at least as a first gun.

I would have to agree with the others here that for home defense a shot gun will be better.

If you catch the bug bad... and are going to want to shoot often, I suggest getting a .22 lr plinker.

I need to go shoot a few times a week, and without reloading, dread buying ammo....

A brick (500 or so) rounds of 22lr is $12.99 at walmart for bulk winchester.
I just paid $12.98 a box (50 rounds) for 9mm. =P You can shoot ten times as much with a 22lr. and quite honestly, the 9mm is not ten time as enjoyable as a 22. =)

Get an AR-10 style platform and you've got both bases covered.

SKS makes a very handy pig gun, the 7.62x39 is good for the task, and is handy.

Plenty of accessories to add on to it, too, if a person wants. Lets a person add an Ak or variant with no ammo complications.

Add in a Ruger 10/22 and you have an spiffy .22LR platform that will be inexpensive to run, and can be accessorized to what ever level you want (like this, if wanted: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=180441<g>)

Saiga 308

Guys,

Just arrived, my new Saiga 308. Everybody is saying good things about this gun, and how appropriate it is for pig hunting. I bought a used Nikon 3X9 scope, and it's just wonderful. Ordered 500 rounds for practice and hopefully, hunting. It seems like a great all-purpose gun.

Now, I need to get it sighted in. Any suggestions?

Now, I need to find experienced people who will get me up to speed; sighting, where to hunt, and whom to hunt with (see, "whom." I'm an English teacher).

I'm all up for suggestions, and I'm very willing to follow instructions.

Putting that in the gun will make it illegal per 922(r) regulations, but you can fix that by swapping out a few parts. See

Look around there and you'll find everything you need to know about conversion, parts resources, and the 922(r) laws. Conversion is fairly cheap and easily done.

Saiga's are great; you'll like it.

at the next gunshow in Austin, look for Saigas. As for 22's, anything by marlin will be very good; mod 60 mod 795, mod 7000 mod 99. all semi autos, the last 2 will be used and older. Also a remmy 597 would be good as well.
since you are a newb to 22's , avoid the ruger 10.22.

also , you will need an ak front site tool, if you ever wanna shoot it open sites, or need to.

You guys have been great! It's a pretty steep learning curve. I want thank to ProCarry for suggesting Action Pawn. They did the FFL transfer painless.

This 922 complience thing seems to be pretty weird. You can make it more complient by making it more of an assult type weapon simply by using American parts? If this is how I understand it, then those people in Washington are pretty dumb. If you make it a little more like an assult rifle, you can make it more complient (less of a risk to society, I suppose) by making more like an assult rifle. Is that right?
