Don't I wish that were true...at least in LA, the only way to carry a gun is to be a cop, a gang member, or a celebrity.

Gun Control? Don’t Hold Your Breath

April 17, 2007 - I don’t know what I was thinking. It seemed to me that the gruesome tragedy at Virginia Tech might prompt a new wave of legislation--not just talk but legislation--to limit the sale of handguns in America. But a few calls and e-mails to people who know the politics of the issue led to a different conclusion: forget about it.

Whatever the rest of the world thinks, whatever Rosie O’Donnell thinks, whatever big city mayors, present and former, think--it remains unlikely that the murder of 32 innocents in Blacksburg will alter the basic guns-for-all equation of American life.

In the aftermath of the shooting, world leaders expressed condolences, but also took it upon themselves to comment on what Australian Prime Minster John Howard referred to as America’s "gun culture." The British Home Minister, who happens to hold a degree from Virginia Tech, said he hoped the event would "prompt a serious and reflective debate on gun issues and gun laws in this states...." Doesn’t he have enough homegrown versions of mayhem to worry about without taking on ours?

Handgun Control Inc. was on the case immediately as well, calling for new federal and state restrictions on handguns and automatic weapons. They took special note of Virginia’s paper-thin control measures, based primarily on an "instacheck" system designed to insure that a potential gun purchaser does not have a criminal record.

Former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial, who spearheaded a lawsuit against gun manufacturers, was on the case again, too.

So I thought: this tragedy happened in Virginia, the home of the National Rifle Association and a bastion of purist allegiance to the Second Amendment. Maybe this would be such a shock to the Old Dominion system that it would lead to a paradigm shift in Richmond and, by extension, in Washington.

It only took a few calls to disabuse me. Top Democratic strategists agree on few things, but one of them is that taking on gun control as a defining issue is a bad--very bad--idea. They think it cost Al Gore in Florida and elsewhere in 2000, and Sen. John Kerry in Ohio (if for no other reason than it got Kerry to put on his neatly pressed camouflage hunting outfit).

I canvassed top leaders and aides of the Democratic establishment on the Hill and got a uniform response: are you kidding? Here’s how one of them put it, bluntly: "The NRA still has a lock on Congress." A political consultant who works with the NRA seemed almost unable even to understand the question, so comfortable in his fortress did he seem.

And Virginia? No paradigm shifts in the offing, according to Larry Sabato, the well-known political scientist at the University of Virginia. It’s not just the Republicans who would oppose any new restrictions (and there aren’t many in Virginia); many Democrats would join them. "The prospects of new legislation are zero, absolutely zero," he said.

In fact, there’s support in Virginia for the idea of MORE guns as a solution to the campus safety problem. Educators in the state years ago decided to ban guns on college campuses; there was a move in the legislature to reverse that by statewide law. Expect to see another such effort.

The beau ideal of Virginia is its junior senator, the volatile Jim Webb, a Democrat who wasn’t hurt one whit when news got out that an aide was trying to carry one of Webb’s pistols into the U.S. Capitol. Sabato says--only half-jokingly--that Webb’s ratings back home went up after the incident.

The right to bear arms means more than its literal words imply: it means a way of life and thinking, involving independence, protection of land, and suspicion of federal--or all government--authority. Virginia is as close to the ground zero of that thinking as there is.

As a result, Sabato said, access to guns is easy--as the shooter in Blacksburg demonstrated. "Hell, I’ve got a clean record, only a few traffic tickets, so I could go out to Clark Brothers"--a famous gun emporium that always does a brisk business.

It’s a way of life in Virginia, and much of America. And it isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Just another 'doesn't get it' kinda guy.

But I was thinking maybe all the antis should hold their breath.
After they passed out and woke up maybe their brains would work right.
Sort of a re-boot...

Perhaps Feinman is trying to lull us into a state of complacency. Screw the mass media and Newsweek. We have lost too many liberties under their careful watch.

I consider myself an independent. I have no faith in either party doing anything besides playing political games. BUT~ the Democrats know this isn't the time to push for more gun control. They've barely got a majority in both houses of Congress, and they WANT the presidency. With nothing more to offer than bashing Republicans, they know they can't afford to lose votes pushing gun control. However, if they win the presidency and keep congress, they'll ram anything they want through with nary a veto, just like Bush's Republicans did when they had a similar situation. And GUN CONTROL will be a big part of it.

I have the sneaking suspicion that these articles are mostly meant to try and rouse some grass roots membership for anti-gun groups. They realize they are getting pounded so they are playing the underdog card.

At the end of the day, the election in 2008 is coming down to Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. There may be one or two more states in play but they don't have much in the way of electoral votes compared to those four. In pretty much every one of these battleground states, gun rights is a major issue for voters.

I don't know if I know WHAT to make of that article. A few "headscratch" moments:

-Rosie O'Donnell - WHY on earth would ANYONE give a flip what she says on an issue??? Not a very good example of a like-able, REASONABLE person there calling for gun control.

-He refers to Brady by their old name, "Handgun Control Inc."

-He mentions New Orleans, where guns were illegally confiscated from a defenseless population post-Katrina. Again, NOT the type of image you want to risk invoking when trying to PUSH gun control!

Huh - almost have to wonder if the writer was "under duress" and went after us RKBA types per orders, but also took some subtle (to the general population at least) stabs at the antis?

"Exactly my thought. He doesn't even notice that it did prompt a lot of discussion about gun control...and how may lives the misguided notion cost in this case."

This was written on the 17th...the discussions were just beginning at that time.

I think this is genuine. Among the Dem boards I watch, there is very very little heart for a fight over this. Oh, sure, there is the pie-in-the-sky moron threads, but I don't see that as doing *anything*.

Hold your horses.

There might not be an overwhelming call for gun control on the Federal level but on the state level but the trumpeters are blaring their call. The antis realized back in 2001 they could not heavily push control on the federal level, without out hurting the chances of the Democrat party in winning presidential elections. So they came up with a new plan that will further push their agenda, but their new call to arms is on the local and state levels, where they are pushing for more AWBs, waiting periods, ammo restrictions, magazine restrictions, and etc. If you look across the country one will notice more anti gun bills coming up in state legislatures, even in states that are traditionally pro RKBA. What they are doing is slowly chipping away at our rights, right underneath our noses, while we are look the other way. You see they have all the time in the world to reach their goal, it does not matter to them if they ban all guns tomorrow or in twenty years. They will keep chipping away, one law and restriction at a time until our right is gone.

For a chuckle, click on the "Examining the 9mm Gun" audio link next to the story. Someone doesn't know what they're talking about...

thats an understatment. that twit is talking about a "9mm" like its a brand name or something. "you even see the familar profile of THE 9mm in most movies and games". like its a type of handgun and not just the chambering

He refers to Brady by their old name, "Handgun Control Inc."
Gee, I thought I was alone in referring to the Nelson Shields/Sara Brady group by their original name Handgun Control Inc.
Next, I will probably find out that folks still refer to the Josh Sugarmann group as National Coalition to Ban Handguns.

I think that times have changed somewhat in the last ten years. There are a huge number of people with CCW licenses now. So many laws have been enacted allowing for CCW where there weren't before. Less people are afraid of concealed carry now than ever before, because their dad, brother, mother, sister, etc. went out and got a license when the laws changed, and realized *wow*, maybe handguns are not such an evil thing after all. More exposure is good. I won't attribute the change in attitude solely to that, for sure, but I think it sure has helped. The tide hasn't turned in our favor completely yet, but it sure looks like the political appetite for gun control is not what it was in the mid-90's.

As for them going after us at the state level...I don't know how much evidence I've seen of that. Seems like the Castle Doctrine laws and "stand your ground" laws are passing in legislature after legislature, as well as laws enabling CCW.

Its about time that the antis are knocked down, now as we all know there is no better time to kick them.

"you even see the familar profile of THE 9mm in most movies and games".

Too bad steve Irwin isn't around anymore to narrate that little jewel. "Here we see the 9mm native to North america, and europe, isn't she just GORAGOUS, Beutiful and deadly, well shes getting a little antsy, I had better set her down."

oh yea and thanks howard for my new sig line:D

Not sure their going after us on the state level. Check out this site.

http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/State/

You will quite surprised on how many anti gun bills are being brought up in state legislatures. In about ten states, things are getting worse for the RKBA, not better. I am quite sure within ten years five states will have very strict gun laws similar to Great Britain or even complete bans. After those five states fall then they will have more resources to work on the next five. Even in states like Florida, there a recent push for more gun control on the state level. Now many of the bills might never make it the floor for a vote but one day they will. It all a matter of time. The antis have plenty of time.
