Last night a bunch of friends and I went to try out the new Maadi 7,62 by 39mm in the sand pit.
I jury rigged this rifle with a Surefire G-2 with a P-61 lamp (120 lumens) and I also put a laser on the barrel.
I used Velcro tape (so not to drill any holes) in the Weaver base for a 336 Marlin, and I supplemented the holding power with 2 rubber bands.
It worked perfectly. We fired 60 rounds and the lamp took it, the switch is the new Tac-Star that will serve also for the 6 P and 9 P etc.
The range was 30 yards and I didn't have any problems until I tried to extend the range. At 78 yards (all ranges measured with the Laser Rangefinder) the light of the P-61 was not enough to illuminate the target.

That is when I moved the portable bench rest to a 100 yards and amazed everybody by shooting my old Remington model 742 that have mounted one of my “little glacier bear” (a 300 lumens flashlights cut down from a 2 “D” Maglite to a size of 7 ½ inches) you can see the results from the target hanging from the barrel of the 742.
One of my friends have a THOR ten millions candlepower spotlight, we used that to illuminate a target 200 yards away and cut loose with the Maadi rifle, but due to the poor battle sights and accuracy of the AK rifle we hit the paper only once out of the ten shots fired.
Night shooting rifles is a difficult proposition when done under no light at the firing position, very difficult to see the rear sight, although the front was illuminated by the Surefire G-2 in the position in which I mounted it.
When ranges are extended that much, I will say that a scope is the only way to go for quick shooting without fumbling.
Of course I took the opportunity to try out my others lights, the MAG 951 and the B.B. 678 (951 lumens and 678 lumens) and they reached to the distant 200 yards target with no problem, but by that time our ammo were gone and I could do no further testing.
We run out of ammo way to soon, but the thing was that we had a lot of fun and get to do a different type of shooting.
