I live in Northern IL near Rt80, and I would like to find some new gun shops to visit.

I have been to Megasports and Gander in Plainfield. I have been to Cabelas and Bass Pro as well. If you know of any other large gun shops, somewhere carrying a bit of selection rather than standard hunting rifles, I would love to hear where to find them.

Thanks.

You mean I-80 ???

Yellowpages.com is your friend: http://www.yellowpages.com/Chicago-IL/Guns-Gunsmiths?search_mode=all&search_terms=Gun+shops

JR's in Aurora: http://www.jrshootingsports.com/
Gat Guns in Dundee: http://www.gatguns.com/
Chuck's in Riverside:
Midwest in Lyons
Maxon in Des Plaines
Gunworks in Elmwood Park

Gunworld in Bensenville is currently closed due to the O'Hare expansion project. They're in the process of getting a new building/permits etc from Bensenville. I haven't heard of an ETA as to when they'll be back up and running. They normally have a booth a the Kane County gun show, there's one coming up this Sunday. http://www.kanecountyfair.com/calendar.cfm#55 Only $5 to get in and a pretty good cross selection. Come up and check it out.

Yes, I meant I-80.

Thanks for all the info. I'll try to get to all of them eventually, and I'll go to the gun show this weekend I believe.

I realize I can search Yellow pages, but sometimes you drive an hour to find some little hinky dink gun shop with dust on everything. So I was hoping for a little suggestion from others.

On the smaller side you also have Rink's in Lockport and The Gun Shop, right down the street from Mega Sports, on the SW side of route 30 and pretty close to I-55.

Both are good small gun shops that are pretty decent to work with. Rinks also has a small range for pistols and pistol caliber carbine as long as they are smaller than an M-1 Carbine.

The Dick's sporting goods in Tinley Park has a limited stock of rifles, shotguns and ammo. The Orland Park store has none. There's also a big new Bass Pro shop West off I-355 at Boughton road and the huge new Cabela's in Indiana, just South off I-80 (Indianapolis Boulevard?)

Check the ISRA calendar for the gun shows in Illinois. Between Kankakee, Wheaton, Kane County, Princeton etc. there is one about every other weekend somewhere.

and ... FWIW, if you have a WWII Mil Surp rifle of any kind, and a touch of masochism in your blood, the ISRA's Winter Wars outdoor 200 yard shoot is on the 19th of this month, rain, snow, sleet or freezing weather, at the Bonfield range. $25 and all the chili and coffee you care to consume in the great outdoors.

G.A.T. Guns in Dundee is a must see. Very close to being as big as Megasports, sometimes they have some good deals. Right now Glock 17/19/22/23/26/27s are all $499 (normal fixed sights, more for night sights or compensated).

Some of those are terrific-maybe not for guns but for accesories. If they priced it in 1985 and it's been burried in the bins you luck out once in a while.
My favorite is when the clear plastic packaging has yellowed--ahhh--vintage NOS NIB.

Good places to go for leisure gun shopping and when you don't really know what you're looking for.

Kane is usually a big show. If you're going you might as well head 4 miles South on Randall and hit the Gander MTN in Batavia.

I just called there and they have one of the rifles I am looking for. I am getting ready to head out the door right now and go there.

I've bought a couple of guns from GAT (not to mention accessories) and found their prices to be very good. Especially if paying cash for new firearms. Staff has always seemed knowledgeable and been helpful. They have a very good selection of handguns as well. Range is pretty good (tho. a bit expensive).

Gander Mtn. on Randal Rd, on the few times I've been there, had a pretty nice selection of 'clearance' guns. Prices were very tempting. (You know they are tempting when your tempted to buy a gun you never knew you needed).

There is R-Guns on Hwy. 31 in Carpentersville also. They sell military surplus guns.

"Forgot about Rinks. Is it still for sale ?"

Sort of. Larry and Lynn still have the for sale sign on the side of the lot, but with the 355 extension right behind them they haven't had a nibble in years.

I think it's Larry's excuse for not painting anything since the Carter administration. OTOH they have given me what I felt were some really good deals on new guns and a couple of used ones too over the years.

My problem is I can drive there for lunch and that makes for some expensive dining every now and then. "Let's see, Cheese Whopper or Cimarron SAA clone in .45 LC with a spare cylinder in .45 ACP for $300?" Tough choice!

And that nibble was probably me. A friend and I looked into it about 5-6 years ago and did some preliminary due diligence. He had it priced about 2x what three banks said it was worth. We made him an offer but were "politely" told no.

Pekin Gun in Pekin IL (just south of Peoria) has a good selection.

Usually about 20-30 AR's, 50 or so 1911's of all makes, an entire case filled with Glocks, a wall of bolt actions, & a wall of shotguns. I've even seen a few M-25's & some police sniper stuff. Lots of knives & military. Adequate reloading supplies.

Not too much in holsters, but, it IS Illinois.

Great shop, but service..........a little stuffy. Counter personnel seem to believe they are doing you a HUGE favor just by acknowleging your existance. Good luck getting their attention for an actual question.
