Now this is insane: 500 mag snubbie!!!

Cut the .500 cartridge down a little, sort of a .500 spl. and you have one heck of a relatively controllable big-bore snubby on your hand. Imagine a .500 gr slug at about 1000 fps. """Shivers"""" sounds good to me.

Howdy to you too, BluesBear. But what are those pistols called?....:D

seeker I know, but I couldn't resist... two

I chronied both barrels during my testing and this is what I found.

Current 8 3/8" (which is 9" when you count the length of the compensator) clocked in with 440gr @ 1620 ft/sec

the prototype 3.125" (which is 4" including the muzzle break)
clocked in with 440gr @ 1420 ft/sec

And in all honesty if you don't mind the full size this 4" is NOT bad to shoot.

Great news, Brett!

Losing only 200 FPS going from 8 3/8" to 3 1/8"? OUTSTANDING!

The backorder list is about to get longer...

What does the gun weigh?

Someone once told a story of firing a .45-70 Pepperbox.

"I don't want to try it. You try it."

How does the .500S&W round compare to the modernized .45-70 hotloads? I understand the pressure is much greater, but I'm more interested in bullet weights and muzzle velocities.

With proper bullet design (long nose and short shank) to take advantage of the 500's 2.300" long cylinder, here's what you can get out of an 8 3/8" revolver:

1950 FPS with a 400 grain cast bullet that has a .200" shank
1725 FPS with a 510 grain cast bullet that has a .300" shank
1300 FPS with a 640 grain cast bullet that has a .625" shank

The above .500 ballistics are slightly better than published data for the 1895 Marlin. Data for Ruger #1s in 45-70 will beat my loads by a little.

You can beat them by a lot in a #1 if you ignore the crimp groove and work up loads with the bullet seated only .200" in the case. No loading manuals do this.

I still maintain that if I am ever flush enough to buy a .45-70 BFR for no good reason I will get a second for a no gooder reason and cut the barrel to 2-3". Why? Because I can. Haven't decided on a comp yet...

This .500 thingy, might make a nice bear :D gun, but I can only carry it forth upon my mutant zombie undead bear slaying travels if Smith releases it in a Scandium PD model. Say, does that thing penetrate body armor and lots of fur?

Mustang45,

Sorry, don't have my copy of the Rifleman infront of me. Its in the Great Guns and Gear 2004 article - where they run down each manufacturer and what new goodies they are bringing out.

In addition to a eight shot 327 I mentioned earlier, S&W is also bringing out a scandium frame 1911 Commander.

I found it. It is CRAZY to even think of doing so. Even if the gun doesn't break, the shooter will be torched to death. I think it is a misprint; they probably want to make it a 30 inches or at least 13 inches.

:D

If they do make it, I will buy a used one and just download the rounds.

Out of the snubby thats about 1970 ft-lbs of energy which is more power than the top .30-30 load in Hodgdon's reloading manual. That's what I call potent. True rifle power with a big hole to boot. If you can hit with it and the size and weight don't bug you I'd trust that gun to stop a bad guy or an angry critter.

A 56 oz. 500 throwing a 440 grain slug at 1420 FPS with 40 grains powder gives 29.1 FPS recoil velocity. This is the same recoil velocity as:

510 grain at 1600 FPS out of stock 8 3/8" .500
450 grain at 1830 FPS out of stock 8 3/8" .500
240 grain at 1200 FPS out of a 329 Ti/Scan .44 mag.
200 grain at 1075 FPS out of a ti/scan 396 .44 Special
125 grain at 1000 FPS out of a ti/scan 360 .357 snubby

The top two loads in the .500 are doable (not max, but getting there) with long-nose, short-shank cast bullets.

I predict the worst thing about the 3" .500 will be the noise and concussion, not the recoil. Kudos to Bret and S&W for making the comp interchangable with a solid piece with a hole through it.

We'll see soon enough.

You could also CCW a short barreled shottie in a shoulder rig. I'd personally prefer that

My gawd...must be time for someone to leave for Boot, 'cuz I agree with him, for once.
