NV assault weapon ban agenda

Heads up...

The NV legislature's Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice will be meeting on 08-28-2012.

Part of the agenda for that meeting will be discussion on whether or not to implement a state level "assault weapon" ban.
Information will only be presented by NV law enforcement (most likely LVMPD), CA anti-gun groups and the NRA.
There will be no public comment for this topic.

The current chairman of the commission is anti-gun, he's the person who prevented "campus carry" for CCW permit holders and opposed the various "castle doctrine" bills from last session.

So what's the plan here? Fill the public seats with 2A advocates to show support for the NRA speaker?

You say there is more than one Anti group presenting, but only the NRA? That sounds like something that could be challenged as restrictive. If there is only one pro 2A then there should be only one Anti. If there are 3 Anti groups to speak then there should be 2 pro 2A. Could this be used to open the meeting?

The Nevada Firearms Coalition is asking people to attend to show support, even though they will not be allowed to say anything.

Initially it was reported that more than one CA anti-gun group was going to be allowed in, but now it appears that they are being limited to one group, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (which use to be the Legal Community Against Violence). The reported multiple groups may have been caused by confused over the group's recent name change (unknown why they changed their name).

08-28-12, NRA-ILA press release of outcome of assault weapon ban meeting.

Today, with more than one hundred people in attendance from across Nevada, the state Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice (a legislative interim committee) pulled the scheduled "Assault Weapons" presentation from the commission’s agenda. After Chairman William Horne (D-34) addressed the crowd, Commission Member Judge David Barker raised a point of order to remove the “Assault Weapons” presentation from the agenda. Judge Barker, who presides over the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, stated that hearing issues pertaining to “Assault Weapons” fell outside the parameters of the commission’s statutorily-defined purpose. He further stated that this was a legislative matter, not to be taken up by an interim committee.

Despite disagreement from Chairman Horne, who argued that in light of all the recent violence he felt the issue did fall within the Commission’s parameters, Judge Barker made a motion to withdraw the agenda item. Commission Member Phil Kohn, a Clark County Public Defender, seconded the motion. Chairman Horne called for a voice vote and the commission voted 8-5 to remove the agenda item.

The recent violence that Chairman Horne spoke of was the recent mass shootings in CO and WI.
The assault weapon ban agenda for the committee was Chairman Horne's way of capitalizing on the tragedy of those two incidents, in order to pass anti-gun laws in NV.

NV Assemblyman William Horne (D-34) is currently up for re-election this November.
Let's work to make sure he is not re-elected.

Been there and done that.

Couple of decades ago local state rep ran as pro2A then introduced AWB. Deck stacked 3/1 by Crim Justice committee. "someone" allowed "evidence" from old HCI to be placed on the documents table so every member of the committee picked up HCI propaganda yet neither NRA, the Florida Sportsman's Association (Marion Hammer, please contact her Tallahassee Florida) nor private citizens were allowed to place any factual material on the table. Second meeting was much the same. citizens were only allowed to speak at a thrid meeting of only part of the committee. Committee chairman told me I was wasting my time that the bill was a done deal. WHen citizens did get to speak anti 2a members of the committee badgered the citizens at the podium. in the end only two of the many citizens were allowed to speak.

The media largely failed to report anything favorable and actually turned off camera lights when the bill sponsor was caught in an out right lie. Only one paper in the state quoted one of the private citizens.

Bill failed in committee BTW.
