    Hello, THRers!

I thought some of you would be interested in a little piece I wrote for Bloomberg Businessweek about the Obama gun surge:

Separately, my book, GLOCK: The Rise of America's Gun, did well this year, in no small part due to support from members of The High Road. So, thanks.

    All best,
    Paul M. Barrett

There are mixed feelings about the federal government intruding into what has been a states issue when it comes to handgun carry permits.

The President has been good for the firearm, accessory, and ammunition businesses (so far). I hope that continues. But his leanings are certainly toward more controls. He would liken it to his proposed tax on the "rich" as being the "right thing to do" for the American People. His way is to do an end around the legislative process if he can or accomplish his objectives through the courts.

I am suprised that the article did not mention the law/regulation that allows carry in national parks and forests in compliance with the state or local laws that are in place. But that was actually started during the Bush Administration and signed by the current President.

Who knows what the future holds?

    Thanks for the link!

Interesting article, and it does point out the fear and uncertainty over guns and gun control.

Wayne LaPierre is quite correct about Obama's gun control history, but it is also a fact that as of yet, no new gun control initiatives have been launched.

Is Obama playing possum? Or does he believe that there is no substantial support for more gun control, and is choosing more winnable battles?

Personally, I believe that Obama is planning on restricting gun rights, but not through more regulation and laws, but through the courts, by appointing federal Judges who will seek to role back and restrict 2nd Amendment rights.

This makes fighting his actions harder, but more important than ever. we must contact our Senators and urge them to exercise their "consent and advice" powers to influence the selection of Federal Judges, Appeal Court Judges, and Supreme Court Judges.

By the way, while I am not going out and panic buying, I do intend to purchase several guns and more ammunition in the near future, largely as a response to Obama's reelection. I am just waiting until the recent upsurge has subsided.

Actually, our Dear Leader was opposed to that regulation, and refused to defend it when it was challenged by a silly argument in the Courts and overturned by a Liberal Judge with more anti-gun feelings than legal knowledge.

Incensed by the ruling and Obama's response, Gun Rights activist in both parties were able to attach an even more strongly worded Concealed Carry Bill as an amendment to a Bill that Obama would not veto. Exactly how that happened is an interesting tale I hope gets fully told sometime. But make no mistake, President Obama strongly opposed it.

Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself?

I think a wise man would look to Chicago and Cook County IL for past performance, note the current conditions therein and make a judgement based on same to see if that possibly bodes an ill wind for the rest of the nation in regard to the RKBAs. I would be a little put out, maybe even peeved, if I had to pay for a State or DHS/Congressional approved FOID to buy ammo or go into a gunstore to even hold a firearm I was considering to buy. :scrutiny:

This 2nd surge... 'Tis a curious phenomenon, I'll give you that.

There might be yet another book in it Mr Barrett, this curious phenom... :uhoh:

Of course, it could just be a coincidence or phase of the moon.
  9. The Glock is NOT America's handgun. The 1911 IS America's handgun and always will be.

If new regs do come they'll be back end, not front end. The front end is a third rail. That includes the AWB. But something like an obscure amendment to a huge tax reform that effectively penalizes primer manufacturers might happen if the antis are clever enough. That worries me MUCH more than some sound and fury from the usual suspects about high caps or "assault weapons."

As far as Obama himself, he's going to govern in the center-left to ensure his party keeps that critical ground for future elections. He will not move hard left because it will endanger the coalition that pulled the swing states into the blue for two elections now.

Would you still say this if Glock sales outnumbered 1911 sales by 3 to 1 margin?

Glock, while having significant sales is not an american made gun or an iconic symbol of america.

IN YOUR OPINION, the 1911 is America's handgun. But BY LEGISLATION, it actually IS UTAH'S handgun. :D

Glocks are Austrian. Colt is American.

By the way, what is up with the backwards Glock? Custom LH?

Muahahaha, you guys... that Barrett is so sneaky ;)

The article(s) on the surge is brief and worth a read but nothing we all don't know.

The book title... a few well chosen words... a little controversy that does seem to get some people fired up. You who disagree with the book title might ponder where Gaston would be without the tremendous US sales of his design. Or not.

Go to the Library... check out the book. :p

Some interesting facts, history and yes, opinion perhaps, spelled out therein. Timing is everything, sometimes. Like a, oh I dunno, a surge?

Glock manufactures pistols in the US. Mostly for export but I've got a US built G19 on my desk as I type this.

It is an Italian made GAP 8mm blank pistol that has gone through photoshop.

Build Glocks wherever you want, not now and not ever America's Gun.

Lot's of 1911's built elsewhere, 1911 is still America's Gun.

    Depends which generation you ask.

Check the holster of the next LEO you see. Probably going to see a Glock. Almost surely not going to see a 1911.
