I've seen a few write ups on the Sig 938 and thought I'd give it a try. I rented one at a local range and here's what I found.

Size and weight are great for a full powered pocket gun, much smaller than a Glock 26, and not a whole lot bigger than a Ruger LCP. Very light considering it's all metal, i.e., alloy frame, steel slide and barrel. Not LCP weight, but lighter than expected.

Shooting it was a surprise, it's a 9mm and being used to a punishing .380 LCP, I was figuring it was going to hurt. No such thing, recoil was very manageable and much less than I expected. Actually felt better than my Glock 26. I was initially dreading shooting 50 rounds, I wound up shooting 100.

Sight are great, wide and squared off, front and rear, very easy to see. Much better than the almost non existent sights on my first gen LCP. Big plus, I was able to shoot out the center of a target at 15 feet. Sig 938 as target pistol?

The magazine was a bear to keep loading, it's small enough that as you load it, the wider floor plate digs into your hand, you're also fighting against considerable spring pressure. I was using the 6 round mag, I understand a longer, maybe more comfortable, 7 round mag that protrudes past the frame is also available. Loading 100 rounds into this mag was not fun.

Bottom line, would I buy one? Sadly, no. As much as I liked it, the type of action, SA hammer fired, was not to my liking. Carrying it ready required you to have the hammer back with the safety on. I found the safety to be small and stiff to move. It would not be something I'd want to deal with trying to find under stress. Also, one more thing to worry about when your mind is preoccupied with survival, think small motor skills. I like the action of the Glock and the LCP, pull the trigger and the shot is fired, no external safety to deal with.

I trained with the Glock for many years with the state agency I worked for, same for the safetyless revolvers before the Glock. Decades of no safety muscle memory. I really liked the Sig, but since I wouldn't carry it, I'm going to pass.

But I might rent it again.

It would be more correct to compare the P938 with the Glock G43, not the G26 and then size is not a factor.

Shot my brother's 938 while we were sighting in our deer rifles. I was impressed with how controllable it was given it's small size. Pretty neat little gun.

I carry a P938, I love it for the reasons you mentioned. Cylinder & Slide makes an extended safety lever for the Mustang that can be made to fit the P938 to help with that. It's on my list of things to do.

I have a P938 and absolutely love it. It doesn't bother me to carry locked and cocked. I am use to carrying and shooting single action pistols. The only carry pistol I own that isn't a single action is my Kel-Tec P3AT. I had a few double action pistols and never could get use to the long trigger pull.

+1. I love my 938. The safety is stiff enough to not cause me concern about accidentally wiping it off, but easy to deselect. My only complaint is the tip of the trigger likes to abrade my finger. If anyone has a cure for that, please PM me. Thanks.

I didn't know that. I have a P938 and a Colt Gov't Model .380. I put a Cylinder and Slide extended ambi safety on my Colt a couple of years ago myself. It is definitely better than the Sig safety.
Thanks for the info.

IIRC the Mustang alloy trigger is a common retrofit to the 938, getting the pin out of the frame isn't easy, tho.

OP makes good points, exactly as my experience. Great 9mm, if you have carried a SA or DA/SA in the service or otherwise, it fits with your routine. When I can hide the slightly bigger size I carry the 938, in the summer a Kahr CW380. Do I sometimes try to wipe the safety off the Kahr, sure. It's better to have that impulse when you carry either, than to be locked into not doing it at all. Your skill set will handle both types of firearms than being found inadequate when you need to get the safety off a gun you picked up or were handed.

Yes, the 938 mag is, frankly, horrible to load manually, a mag loader is really needed for range use and magazines themselves aren't cheap. I find the Kahr mags much easier to load. Spring pressure is just one of the things makers use to tune the cycle of reloading, I suspect SIG used the higher pressure to meet the cyclic speed of the slide to prevent any issues of override. They aren't the only ones to do to that. Small pistols with light construction have high slide speeds, and its hard to get around it. If you add mass then you give up light weight (ahem) so something else has to compensate.

It does make the 938 less than easy to shoot at the range - use a mag loader and that part is fixed. I note it's those of us still thumb jamming ammo into those slick chromed mags who mention it.

I am also a fan of the P938, and have been carrying it every day for several years.

I love the SAO action, and carry it cocked and locked every day. It is just like anything else, you need to practice with any gun to get it to where it feels natural. I also am used the SAO functionality from 1911's, and I even have the SIG P226 Legion in SAO.

Use what works for you obviously. You won't have time to think in a gunfight.

I like my P938 as well. The safety doesn't bother me.

The only problem I've had is getting the recoil spring and guide rod back in the gun after cleaning.

I do the majority of my training with a Glock and I'll typically take my G26 when I go out of town. With that said, I simply love my P938. I've carried 1911's in the past, so I routinely sweep the safety area out of habit and have no issues with the size of the Sig's safety. Accuracy still shocks me, which is excellent. I find myself carrying the 938 more often.

I had the same issue with mine. I used a small nail file to file down the sharp edge at the bottom edge of the trigger. It's been fine since.

No Model 938 (yet), but love both my Colt Mustang and SIG P238 for all of the same reasons. Easily concealed, great ergonomics, very accurate, and comfortable to shoot. Like many others here I have been carrying SA pistols for many years so I'm very well accustomed to the manual of arms regarding their use.

I have owned several 938s, and like you folks, really liked them. Accuracy is excellent in such a tiny gun. I could regularly keep a magazine inside a 3 inch target with rapid fire at 7 yards. That is probably child's play for some of you, but it's the only pocket 9 I can do that with.

I ended up parting ways with them however. Mostly because of the safety. I just wasn't confident that I could remember to disengage it in a defensive scenario. They sure put some gorgeous finishes on them. The equinox and the SAS are particularly striking, and I loved the sights on the equinox.

I also was not confident swiping off the stock safety on my P938 so I got an extended safety from Cylinder & Slide and it is great now. They do not list it on their site, you need to call and ask for it. About $50 if I remember. Mine needed a little work fitting the tab that retains it, but otherwise it works fine. The P938 is my daily carry gun and what I use to compete in IDPA BUG weekly matches so I do shoot it often.

The safety is one sided, not ambi like the stock safety. I do not like ambi safeties on a carry gun.

Long time 1911 shooter so the safety is natural for me.

My P938 Extreme is my EDC. I pocket carry it in a Desantis Super Fly Holster year round. Like the OP, I rented one and put 100 rds through it before buying. Also, like the OP and others, I've found that loading either the 6 or 7 rd mags is tough when you're putting in the last couple of rounds. Unlike the OP, however, I'm totally comfortable carrying "cocked and locked" since all my pistols (with the exception of an SA XD-40) are 1911s. Truth be known, I'm uncomfortable with any pistol that can't be "cocked and locked".

I sold mine. I don't like cocked and locked carry without a grip safety.

An uplula loader turns this into an EASY chore....

Yup, me too. I do have to admit that I hate loading these mags by hand as well.

One weird thing about this gun is that when you eject the mag, one round always comes out the top of the mag when you eject it. This is not including the round that is in battery. Whenever I pop the mag in this gun, I always end up with 2 rounds that have to reloaded into the mag, and it is not the easiest task in the world, that is for sure.

Sounds like you need a new mag or try to adjust the feed lips. I have 3 mags for mine and none of them do this.

Doublehelix, all three of my mags do that. I guess it's inherent.

I have talked with several P938 users, and also have read threads over at the SIGtalk forum that this is a normal "feature" of the P938. If yours does not do this, you are the lucky one!!! Are you using SIG mags or 3rd party?

Mine are all SIG mags, I have two 6 round mags and one 7 round. I don't use the six rounders much anymore, but I unload my 7 rounder at least once a month when I practice with it and haven't seen that issue.
