So, I rook my CPL last month and finally found some time and cash to go turn in all the paperwork. While turning it in, the lady gave me a fingerprint card and said " the sheriff's office is closed, but you can go Monday, then you'll get a letter with the date of your appointment to go before the board in a few weeks."
I then asked when I should expect to have this appointment. Her reply- "4-5 months"
:what:
My questions are: A) I thought that the county legally had a timeframe to have all this sorted out, and that it was certainly NOT that long?
B) The board appearance is basically a screening, where they ask me questions regarding my want to carry, if I plan on going out and shoot everyone that looks at me funny, etc. It's really stupid. How can they legally do this? I thought a background check sufficed as a "screening"?

What county?

The problem with the timeframes in the law is that their are no penalties if the county violates those timeframes. That makes it hard to hold their feet to the fire.

As to legality of having to go before the gun board, yes, they can still require you to do that. But, the board has lost the ability to deny applicants unless they can show a complelling reason to do so.

Macomb County
Is there a way I can make complaints? Naybe that will speed up the process. Or would that make them take even longer?
I haven't got a problem going in front of the board, it's just the fact that it adds unnecessary length to the process. That, and I'll have to miss class to do it.

smalls: be glad you are in Macomb. Wayne last I heard was taking six months just to get to the gun board interview and then four to five months to issue.

i also live in macomb county last year when turned my cpl app in in feb and was in front of the board by april and recieved my cpl.you wil probably get your letter for your appointment in about 6 weeks.

There really isn't much you can do about the time it takes to get before the board or get your CPL approved except sue the gun board in court. I've yet to hear of anyone who wanted the spend the money to do that. By the time the court case rolled around the situation would be resolved.

Who would you complain to? No one really has authority over the gun boards.

Wow I have nothing to add other than that really sucks. I'll consider myself lucky to be in Oakland. No gun board and you don't want to know how long my last renewal took. I didn't realize Macomb was that bad.

Best of luck getting through the process. Keep at it.

Yikes! I got mine in Ionia county in 2007-2008. I turned in my paperwork to the Clerk just before Christmas 07, Gun Board met January 9th or 19th (Don't remember which) and my permit was in my hands by the first week of February. Good luck, and maybe this video will help you with the wait.

Oakland still has a gun board. All Michigan Counties do. The Oakland County gun board doesn't normally require the applicants to appear before the board though and processes the applications through fairly quickly.

Sorry guys, I was without internet for a few days.
Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll just have to wait it out. My mother got hers in rouggly two and a half months last year. I forgot what county she was living in at the time. She also never had to appear before any board. She was confused when I told her I had to.
But on a good note; my gun came in today and I pick it up tomorrow :D.
And seeing how I've got all of you local guys here, which range(s) do you usually go to?

I don't understand the gun board interview. My county(Midland) didn't make me sit for any interview. My application did have to go before the gun board but I didn't have to be there. From what I understand of the law they can't deny your CPL unless they have real cause anyways so whats the point of the interview?

I agree that there seems to be little point to the gun boards interviewing every applicant. I think the gun boards that do that do it because they can. They hate giving up that last little bit of control

Now, some gun boards only call people in if their is something about their application or background that makes them want more info, that I can see. (Examples include offenses or convictictions that are not automatic disqualifiers, but which make the the gun board pause before rubber stamping the ap)
