So today I bought a weird Model 1917 - its nickel and has some sort of gold trigger and hammer. It is marked "US Army Model 1917" with serial
"No 67 4XX" on the butt which the internet tells me is a manufacture of June 1918. It does not have the "US PROPERTY" under the barrel or the flaming bomb mark either. It has the Smith and Wesson and the 3 trademarks on top of the barrel. It also has original plain wood grips and the lanyard ring.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is if its a commercial copy or a military revolver that has been messed with by a subsequent purchaser.

Any opinions?

Either way I am very happy as I paid $225.00for it.

After WWI, many people modified these fine old revolvers, at least the ones that had found their way into private hands. They were not held in high regard by some people, since the M1911 was the standard issue sidearm.
The property stamp could have been ground off, or the barrel replaced. Still, many of these are still fine sixguns even though they are of little value to collectors.

Sounds like a stanard military 1917 that has been nickeled and gussied up by a previous owner. Any missing markings are likely due to polishing for refinishing. None of these came in nickel originally and certainly none had gold plated parts.

It's worth the price as a shooter.

Nope no S&W trademark on the left side, and the barrel has the same serial # as everything else.

Oddly enough, the star of the extractor and the part of the rod that doesn't usually show are still blued and not nickel.

Does not appear to be one of those "1937 Brazil" deals either.

About half of the S&W 1917s I see for sale these days have been rebarreled.

S&W catalogued the 1917 for many years after the war. Extra barrels were plentiful and of course not military marked.

It appears this one was further violated by getting blinged in the bling.
Fo shizzle.

At the price, I'd just get some fake pearl grips to complete the look. Load up a bunch of moonclips with 230gr ball and have fun. Show us some pics and let us know how it shoots.

Embrace the Bling

Man, I would love to have an original S&W 1917. Barring that, a fiddled-with 1917 would do.

In your case, I would go get the pearl or fake ivory grips to finish out the pimptastic revolver.

Hmmm, on seconf thought, maybe some ebony grips...

Some pics would be nice.

I'll try to get my new digital camera workin'.

I know there is some tips on the tech forum on how to post pics.

Not fun being technology impaired!:)

RE: show pics

Sorry, for some reason I do not have the option of "Attach Files", I tried to follow P95 Carry's instructions on the Tech Forum but there is no box to attach files on my computer.

There is not the box to "Attach Files" on my computer. Overall, though I know this is not the place for it, I loathe the day I downloaded "AOL 9.0 Security Edition" though I know it may have nothing to do with this.

The "Posting Rules" at THR say I am able to post attachments so I guess the problem is with my computer.

I was able to download the picks to my computer so I guess thats a partial victory.

Picture a 1917 in bright nickel with a gold colored trigger and hammer, but with the lanyard and original grips! ( I do not think the hammer and trigger are actual gold).

I do admit that I find the previous version to have been much easier to use than this new one.

a big green "button

Thats my problem - for some reason on my home PC that button isn't there!:cuss: It is at work though!

I'll try again when I get home!:)

Update: no dice: I got the green button this time but "upload" went on for a half hour then locked computer. I'll waste no one's time any more on this one!
