So I went with a friend of mine to a few gun ranges near me, they aint too far only like 25 minutes or so.

Anyhow I tried a bunch of pistols out, and of the ones I fired the following I liked...

Glock 23

Those are the ones I tried that felt pretty good. the ones I kinda figured I'd like anyhow.

The .40s obviously a little stronger than the 9mms, but they all felt pretty good to shoot.

Heres the thing!

I am aiming for something I could go to the range with for practice, but something that I also can carry and that has a decent amount of stopping power.

I'd buy all of them if I could! lol but I would like to pick one of those,...

convince me into one of them!

Of the one's you listed, my personal preference would be one of the SIG's.

OTOH, my carry gun is an H&K USPc in .40, did you try a compact H&K?

First question - would you be able to carry all of those guns without showing/heavily printing?

If you like the subcompacts (G27/XDSC), I'd go ahead and get one of those unless you can conceal their larger brothers.

I hadn't tried a compact H&K yet.

As far as concealing, I'd be able to conceal just about all of them, though the smaller the easier to conceal of course!

oh and as a side note the XD compact is a .45 (where as all the others are 9mm and .40)
 
Ah, the XD compact .45 is a great choice IMO with the shortened grip and 4" barrel. I wish they made those in other calibers. With that one, you could always get the extended mag/grip thing and go back to a full-size if you wanted.
 
If they all felt good to you, I don't think you could really go wrong with any of them. FWIW, my daily carry is a 229, and I have no trouble concealing it. I use a Milt Sparks VMII holster, which I highly recommend. It's the most comfortable IWB holster I've tried.

I also have a set of Crimson Trace grips on it, and recommend those as well.

Also, if you're not aware, Sig is releasing a special edition for the summer called the Super Capacity Tactical series, which fits more rounds into the same frames.
Same as the 226/229 frames but here's the key differences:
• Tru-Glo fiber optic front sight
• SIGLITE rear sight
• Front slide serrations
• Comes with 4 max capacity magazines:
- 229 9mm = 17 rnds
- 229 .40 = 14 rnds
- 226 9mm = 20 rnds
- 226 .40 = 15 rnds

eventhough I'm a huge Glock Fan I would have to agree taht one of the sig's would be my choice in the .40 caliber. But...If you like the Glock 23 and shoot it well get it, it will cost you a few dollars less.

Well, no, not all of them at once. :)

I also carry a 229 in a VM2. Very nice set up. It can't be overstated though, get a good belt if you're going to carry. Something like the ones from The Beltman. Makes all the difference in the world.
