Greetings all,

I am moving to Columbus, Ohio next week and I hope to be able to hit the range there.

If anyone on the forum is from that area, maybe I can get some help on where to go.

Several state parks have public ranges. The closest ones that I'm aware of are Delaware State Park and Deer Creek State Park.

The Powder Room in Powell (north of Columbus) Indoor range is pistol and .22 no hi-power. They have an outdoor range (100 yd I believe) for hi-power or at least they did.

New Albany Shooting Range in New Albany (east of Columbus) Indoor range for pistol and rifle.

Delaware State Park north of Columbus. Outdoor range for pistol and hi-power rifle.

There is a new indoor range in Lancaster (south of Columbus) but I have never been there and don't know much about it.

There are also a couple of indoor ranges north of Delaware but I have never been to either.

Edited to add:

Columbus just passed an AWB that could be interpreted to include automatic pistols. It has not been challenged and I haven't heard or read of any immediate intent to do so. If you have a choice I would not live in Columbus proper although the suburbs often follow suit when Columbus does something so it may be a matter of time before the suburbs begin enacting legislation as well. Columbus area is the land of the classic soccer/security mom mentality so don't let the fact that Ohio has shall issue CCW or that central Ohio voted for Bush lull you into a false sense of security as these people are schitzophrenic (sp?) to say the least.
 
I'm sorry to hear about your move also. If you still have a chance to change your plans move to one of the subburbs instead. Columbus has some very anti gun laws.

Here's a plan you may want to consider, Intrepid 9mm:

1. Buy a house in an unincorporated area.
2. Get at least 1 acre of land.
3. Build a backstop.
4. Have fun. :)
 
Thanks for all the information, folks. I should have been more specific in saying that my new job is in Columbus-office is on Johnstown Road. I don't know much about the surrounding area. I flew in for an interview (nice airport) and flew out the same day. The wife and I have been surfing the real estate websites but don't know much else. Any additional info on the "burbs" will be greatly appreciated.

I was aware that Ohio is a shall issue state and CWP will be on the agenda as soon as I establish residency. After I find a place to hone my skills. :D

308win, what's in the AWB ban? Automatic Pistols? :scrutiny: It doesn't sound good. Does anyone have a link?

Anyhow, I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions when I get there. Lots of research to do and so forth.

The indoor range in Lancaster is nice..20 some lanes if I remember correctly...Run by nice people and they have many different firearms you can rent and check out as well (this feature came in handy when I was choosing my second gun)...The cost to rent a lane was $10 if I recall right..It's inside the Ohio Valley Outdoors building across from the Meijer on St rt 33
 
Powder Room in Powell, OH

There is no outdoor range at the Powder Room. The area surrounding it has really grown up, and the range is surrounded by trendy restaurants and expensive homes.

The range can handle most pistol calibers, but no magnums.

The store is clean and well stocked. If any of you are from Columbus and haven't been to the Powder Room in the past 5 years or so, you're in for a surprise. The current owners have put a lot of effort into it.
 
As far as the suburbs, I live in Westerville and the schools are on par with Worthington, Gahana, New Albany, Dublin but still a mess and getting worse and taxes are high and going higher. The Westerville School Board philosophy seems to be that we will throw all of the money at our second rate efforts you will give us.

When you know you are going to be in town and want to check out New Albany or the Powder Room shoot me a private message and we will see if we can work out a trip to one or the other.

If you are going to be working on the East side you might want to consider the Johnstown or Pataskala areas Both are in Licking County and not quite as schitzo as the Franklin County/Delaware County areas. Westerville is a nice community but like I say the taxes are getting to be rediculous.

Here is my two cents worth on Columbus suburbs. Since you are going to work on Johnstown Road the closest to you are Gahanna, Westerville, New Albany, Whitehall and Bexley. Gahanna and Westerville are simular in price range (middle to high) with LOTS of businesses/restaurants/shopping areas. New Albany is the new "big-money" suburb. Bexley is the older high-rollers, very expensive stone mansion type homes. Location of Capital University. Whitehall is...well not the most modern suburb of Columbus. Sort of in a time warp. Can't help much regarding the schools, expect they ALL seem to have a tax levy every election. Personally, if I were having a friend move to the area I'd suggest moving out away from the city. Into the country. In your case, head east into Licking County. One final thing, whether or not you are a college football fan, you are going to be bombarded with "The" Ohio State football program. :barf: Regarding the indoor ranges you have a very good selection.
 
+1 on the range in Lancaster - it is in my neck of the woods.
I have purchased several guns from them over the years.
I live out in the country, so I shoot at home.

I did take my CCW class at Lancaster last year. The "ex-LEO" instructor was a real bonehead - I complained to the owner, and it seems that he is gone now. Cost was, I believe, about $125. It was 12 hours of pain (very remedial), but I got my license!

I also heartily support #5 - you need to have all of us over!

I have been to New Albany many years ago. It was a little "snooty" then.
I have several friends at work who have been there recently.
I hear that it it pricey.

Hey there. You're working right in my hood. I'm on the North side of Gahanna about a mile south of New Albany just off Johnstown Rd. The New Albany range is by far the most convenient, and the most modern, but it is a little pricey. As other have said, the Powder Room in Powell is an afffordable, fun place for handgun and rimfire rifle practice. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Lancaster range as well. I have been in Columbus for a week now. Just got access to the internet so I thought I would drop a line to all who have been very helpful. It looks like I'll be trying to stay on the east side of C-town outside of I 270. Reyoldsburg, Pickerington or Gahanna will probably serve as a temporary base camp. Once I get settled I will P.M. some of you guys to try to get together and punch some holes in paper.

Welcome to Ohio. I hope you like it here and staying out of Columbus is a very good choice.

My wife and I go to the Powder Room 1-2 times a month if you ever get up that way.
 
Welcome to Ohio. You've likely used the AC and the Furnace this week LOL.
Fall is great here...unless it's a wet one. It doesn't usually get too cold (and stay that way) till mid December or so.
 
Welcome to Buckeye Land. If you don't like the weather wait about 5 minutes and it will change. I don't know if you listened to the news tonight but there is a rash of home invasions that are getting press because the victems are well to do. A customer told me that he bought an 1187 at the new Dicks on Polaris today for $497 and couldn't take it with him because he needed a permit from the City of Columbus - another reason not to shop there. We need to have a Central Ohio shoot. Does anyone know the close date for the Delaware State Park Range?

As I recall, the New Albany range is pretty busy in the evenings and I think they have leagues or at least they used to. I haven't been to the Powder Room for about a year but it is usually busy. What about the new range at Lancaster, will they take reservations for groups?
