Then again, Shootcraps, I have a custom Colt's NCO -- Commander frame and 3.5 inch Officer's ACP slide -- and don't have a problem with too much muzzle flip ... (But I do think the CCO is an excellent platform).
Under $1000.00 I can highly recommend a Springfield Champion. This is my second one and both have been really great shooters that are a real pleasure to carry.
For another take on the question. I also carry my over $1000.00 4" gun....$1600.00 new in box to be exact. The Wilson CQB Compact is one fine specimen of a gun and man what a shooter. The difference is the shorter grip. It is still comfortable and easy to shoot even with that shortened grip.
Not a 1911 but close enough Smith & Wesson 945 in the short version. It's a great shooter and will shoot with the custom 1911s. You can pick them up for under 1000.00.

Combat carry readyout of the box... good trigger, accurate, lots of features and reasonably priced.

I want opinions on the best 4" 1911 for CCW. I am more concerned with reliability than accuracy. I want it accurate but I don't want tolerances so tight that some dirt will jam the weapon.
Requirements:
1. 4" 1911
2. Under $1000.
3. Reliable
4. Good CCW qualities.
Subsequent question: Just for fun....Do they make the model in 9mm?
MY SW1911PD Commander has been 100% reliable and shoots extremely accurate at 7 yards. It did just as well as my full size 1911s over the weekend, and is light weight for carry. A couple of people watched me shooting it and the full sized PD and asked me if I were shooting Kimbers. When I told them S&W, they hadn't heard they were making 1911s.
It's interesting, Shootcraps' comment was that he didn't think that a Commander size wasn't feasible unless it's bobtailed. I was going to suggest the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail. A beautiful, Stainless 1911 that comes Bobtailed and incorporates many features that are often added aftermarket. It's in the $800 range, plus or minus. I have one and love it, came across it when I was considering going to the time, trouble and expense of Bobtailing a Commander sized 1911. It conceals better than my Ultra Carry II in an IWB holster. The UC II is great for pocket carry. Take a good look at the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail, (CBOB).
