I just came back from Gun World in Oklahoma City and was very impressed. Nice place, very clean, well laid out, friendly folks, lots of guns, several interesting antiques, some good antique milsurps (my thing).

The range was very clean and the air qualtiy was excellent.

Glad you enjoyed it... but all my experiences there have been pretty bad. All you listed is correct, but their prices and policies are insane. Can't be under 21 and rent a lane. Prices are 300% of MSRP.

Just not my cup o' tea, I guess. I prefer Brigadoon myself, if I'm out that way.

And, well, Outdoor America, too. They do give me a paycheck every now and then. :)

I concur with Dionysusigma...

The range at Gunworld is state of the art - unfortunately - the guys who run Gunworld are Pirates and that's being nice. THR policies prohibit me from saying what I'd really like to say about them. There's one kid there who is half way human but over time he's turning. Their prices are too high, their selection is weak. Gunworld is good for one thing and one thing only IMO - special orders. You will get a fair price and usually one day delivery. But don't buy anything on the shelves there be it guns or accesories unless you like having your pocket picked (for example - a jag that sells for $2.50 or so anywhere else - $6 at GW - or that's how much they wanted the last time I was in there).

If you need a good range to go to I recommend:

1. Public Range - Canadian Ranges. Take I-40 west and get off on Banner Road. Go South about a mile. At the 1st road past the school take a right. About 2 miles down that road on the left you will see the sign. It's an excellent range with covered lanes. It has a pistol/22 range. 50 yard range, 75 yard range and a 100 yard range. It's run by an elderly man about 75 or so who is very friendly and very, very knowledgeable. You can shoot all day for $8. No range officer. If you go anytime but hunting season during the week you'll pretty much have the whole place to yourself. Saturday can be busy. Sunday mornings it is generally uncrowded except during the opening days of hunting season. The only down side is the longest range is 100 yards.

2. OKC Gunclub - best ranges in the OKC metro if not the state. They're locate NE of Lake Arcadia. Unfortunately you must be a member to use them and can only join in January and there's a waiting list. You can shoot Cowboy Action and IPSC there without being a member.

3. Tri-City GunClub - I am a member. Their range is down south of Norman. Excellent facility with a Rifle Range out to 200 yards, Rifle Range out to 80 yards and pistol range out to 25 yards. Archery range and shotgun range. You can join anytime. Annual fee is $110 if you don't wanna work and $75 if you can put in 8 hours of work in the calendar year. Almost every weekend there is a shooting event of one kind or another. Great bunch of guys.

4. There's a private facility up in the Luther area I've heard good things about but I've never been there.

5. H&H - they have a fairly good indoor facility and reasonable fees and policies (no steel cased ammo and they forbid almost all S&B brand). Unfortunately unless you want to experience the fun of lead poisoning I wouldn't go there - I don't go there anymore. The times I did the ventilation was so bad that I always left with the tell tale lead poisoning sign of sweet taste in the back of my throat. They keep saying they'll fix it - maybe they have in the last year, I don't know - but I doubt it because they've been saying it for years. Otherwise it's a pretty good gunstore. Fair prices, good selection, reasonably knowledgeable staff. They're not real big on special orders but will do them.

I did think that some of their prices were high, but not having seen other OKC gun prices I considered it to be a regional difference. Their CZ40 was 20% higher than would be charged for here in East Tennessee.

Wow, I didn't know there's any public outdoor ranges near the OKC area. I'm kinda new to shooting and I've been shoot most at H&H and Gun World. I got to go try out that Canadian Range and see how it's like to shoot outdoor. I live in Yukon so it's prety close by :) .

Hey Werewolf, is there anything I need to know before going to the Canadian Ranges? I.E bing my own target stand or anything like that. Oh, and what is their hours of operation.

Thanks,
Sonny.

Canadian Ranges

The man that runs it [Harry] monitors the ranges by tv from the office and if you break any of the rules he will kick your a$$ off the range.
For $100.00 he will show you how to shoot through a quarter at 100yrs with his M1.
Harry is good people and you will have fun if you go shoot at his range.

Bring a chair. There's a serious shortage of seating on that range. IIRC, their hours are pretty much just sunup to sundown. I don't know exactly when it opens, but I do know it closes at sundown.

Canadian Ranges are open from about 8AM till dusk. Earlier in the summer. A lot depends on the old guy and when he decides to get there.

If he's not there just drop $8 in the locked box near the entry gate and go on in.

There are plenty of target stands up at various ranges. Plywood sheets. Just bring your own paper targets. The range provides big ole construction grade staplers. You can also buy a wide range of targets there as well as ammo at reasonable prices.

By the way - if yur into trap and skeet about a mile further down the road is a pretty good range for the shotgunners.

H&H Gun Range

H&H Gun Range has the BEST Range in Oklahoma, and if you were SMART you would now that, the Taste you get in your mouth is not because of bad ventilation. It is caused by primers in the ammo. You get the same Great taste in a outdoor range as you do in a indoor range. I guess you have to shoot often to even know this!

Oh my GAWD! :barf:

What a sheltered life you must live. H&H is OK for the casual shooter who limits himself to 25 yards or less and likes to shoot at hanging paper.

The ventilation is horrible and breathing the smoke from primers and that created from firing lead bullets is bad for one's health.

If one must use an indoor range (and for handguns they're as good as an outdoor range) and as much as I hate Gunworld and the pirates that run it - it is truly a state of the art indoor range with programmable targets that even flip at random times if one wants.

Be that as it may there are a number of outdoor ranges in the OKC metro area that put even the best indoor range to shame.

I suggest you get out and find one. That is if you aren't an H&H schill...

Hey, Dionysusigma, I'll be coming by your shop on Wednesday or Thursday morning next week, unless my boss has other scheduling ideas for me. So where is this Gun World? Does it have another name?

Bart Noir

GunWorld is on S. Sunnylane between 29th and 44th on your left if you're going south.

If you go there you'll enjoy the range. You'll enjoy it even more if you limit your interaction with the staff.

If you're into antique firearms they have a nice collection of some really good ones (that is if the price is any indication). ;)

You're coming to OKC at just the right time. This time of year the weather is perfect - nice and dry, not too hot, not too cold.

1911boy, the lead styphnate in the primers is the primary contaminant that you "taste" at indoor and outdoor ranges. This is why many companies are developing lead-free primers. If the range ventelation was good the primer lead would be carried down range. If it's not, there is inadequate air flow. If the air gets recirculated and the lead is not removed you just pump it around in a circle from in front of the shooter to coming out behind them to be blown across them (picking up even more lead with each cycle until the blowers are shut down and it settles out onto every surface.

If you do not wash your hands thoroughly after shooting you then take the lead that was deposited on you hands with each shot with you. If you stuff a buger in you face before you wash your hands you eat some of the lead that was on your dirty hands.
