I saw several boxes of ammo that said "For Ruger Only". I was wondering if the frame on the Old Model Vaquero is as strong as the frame of the Black Hawk or the Red Hawk? If not, would the Vaquero still safely shoot the "Ruger Only" stuff?
But the old Vaquero is the same frame and cylinder as the blackhawk, and super blackhawk, so it should take those loads. The question is given the frame size and grip of the vaquero can your hand take them, and why do you even want to shoot them?
If you want to be sure get the name of the ammo manufacturer of the box and call them.
In terms of strength, yeah, the Old Vaq is on the 44Mag-sized frame. It doesn't look as strong as a Blackhawk at the topstrap but since the Vaq doesn't have that "rear notch" for the rear sight it is suspected that the Vaq is the slightly stronger gun by a hair.
For really serious loads consider converting it to a Bisley Vaquero with the Brownell's Bisley conversion bits.
