My co worker is looking for fast cash and offered this to me for $275. It is an older Remington 700 in .243. He is not sure what model, im guessing ADL. It was his dads gun so its pretty old and has an old Leupold scope.

So can you tell me what model it is and what is it worth? I know leupold is a good brand but is a scope that old any good?

Looks to me like an adl

For that price, I'd jump on it no questions. Send the Leupold back for a check up and will be good as new. As for the rifle, excellent price to start a custom build off of. If you don't want it, I'll take it off your hands for $275 :)

$275 is a pretty good deal, but before I 'd buy it I would be sure to look it over very well. .243 is a known barrel burner and I would like to know how the barrel looked before I bought it. However, most older hunting rifles are usually carried a lot and barely shot so it's probably fine. Still better to be safe than sorry and end up with a project rifle you wasn't looking for.

Old Leupold scopes are better than many new scopes and besides, they have a life time guarantee. Like said above, send it back to the company for a check-up and it will return good as new.

Nice rifle and scope combo. Don't forget the range report...

ADL with a Leupold 4x for 275?

Oh yeah, I'd go for that.

The rear sight on the 700 is an easy e-bay replacement (screws hold the large ramp sight on),
but you will find the non-folding rear sight will interfere with your vision when looking thru the scope with it's present Weaver rings.
The bottom portion of the scope will have a dark and blurry look to it.

I would enjoy as is and probably remove the front sight as well.
IMO, Remington 700 irons are a bit ungainly looking anyway.

You probably already have, but I'd give the bore a
thorough cleaning to remove possible excessive copper fouling.
SOP for me on any used centerfire, especially in a fast mover like a .243

Now where's a deal like that for me!

I agree with DSM, for that price jump on it, get it checked out by your local trusted gunsmith, send the scope back to Leupold for a checkup and you have scored a bargain!

Most of those old adls were fantastic shooting rifles. You did very well at that price. By the way they look real nice with that gloss stripped off and a nice oil finish.

ADL, and I'm guessing from the 1970's based on the stock and impressed checkering.

For that price I would buy just for the action and toss everything else including the scope.

The rear sight often has to be removed to mount a scope if it's mounted low. The objective bell often hits it. Not a big deal.

Jump on it, clean and rebed everything and enjoy it for the rest of your life if you let the barrel cool between shots and get the copper out.

Why rebed? (It might be fine as is.) And why cool barrel between shots?

I agree with dubb, the action alone is worth more than asking price

Turns out the scope is a leupold M8-4x, I dont know much about scopes but my hunting scope is adjustable 3-9.

What do you think the leupold is worth? it is old, glass is good but the paint has seen better days

It has seen some hard use and in a caliber that can cook a bore, so I would clean and inspect the crown / throat / bore with a good light before buying. If it shoots, I would probably grab it at that price. I love the vintage Leupold. I could use a gun with character like that, good truck gun to beat on.

Enjoy it, they are real nice rifles. If one crossed my path for the price you paid I would buy it in a heartbeat. You did very well.

A 243 Win is a barrel burner? Since when?

When I think of barrel burners, I think of some of the Weatherby cartridges, a bunch of wildcats, and maybe a few commercial rounds but certainly not the little short-action 243 Winchester.

I would give that for just the action. You got a nice deal.
That was my thinking. :)
I would be all over that rifle if for nothing else the action which I could rebarrel.

As to the barrel burner issue with the 243 Winchester? That was discussed in some detail in this thread a few years ago. "Barrel Burner" will always come down to the ratio of case mouth diameter to case capacity or volume. How much hot gas are we pushing through what size hole? Some cartridges are rougher than others and while the 243 is not a barrel burner like the 220 Swift or 22-250 it is rougher than for example the 308 Winchester the cartridge is based on. The link is a good read.
