Ithaca 10ga semi-auto police gun with 89mm chamber and 18.5" barrel choked 0 or 1/4.

Mav 88 18.5 bbl. 5rds 00 buck. Don't get too cute or smart with your ammo. You might over think it.

Personally, I am not a shotgun for defense guy, but if so then it would be Xtrema-2 and if legal AA12 or USAS12.

I would keep my single shot H&R. I've done every bit of what's done to it and I'm comfortable shooting it. I've gotten to where i can eject a shell and load another one in about the time it would take to chamber another round in a pump, so why not grab for the lighter gun?

Ithaca Model 37 riot gun is what lies under my bed for things that go bump in the night. This same gun served Dad well in Nam in 65 and 66 so I now rely on it to protect my family

multitasking

One shotgun, three barrels. Mossberg 500 with long birding barrel, 18.5 HD bbl and a .50 cal muzzleloder barrel. It takes 30 seconds or less to change out. It is a gun that feels good in my hands and has been reliable as can be (once I got rid of the plastic safety).

It has killed doves, grouse, pheasants, turkey, ducks and geese with the long bbl, and I hope I never have to find out, but I presume it would hit a bad guy just as hard as necessary with the shorty. The muzzleloader bbl is just for fun, but it's deadly accurate to 100 yds, though I haven't got my best load worked out on it yet.

In my book, the best HD gun is the one you feel comfortable and capable using. For me, that's my Moss 500 wearing the 18.5 and full load of 00.

My 870 marine magnum.. Extended mag, rust resistant, built like a tank and proven action. I also have a benelli, but for HD i wouldnt trust the auto as much as the pump..

I'm a Mossberg 500/590 guy, so,,,
Matter of fact, my 500 Mils Gun is my only HD shotgun right now.

Tried the 870, 500, and ended up with a Maverick 88 that I use for both HD and trap. The 18.5" barrel was a cheap addition. Probably in the 800-1000 trouble-free round range with it so far. No fancy stocks and such needed. I got a Tru-Glo front sight bead and a stock band for an extra 5 or 6 rounds. No.4 in the tube and 00 on the stock band. I'm well satisfied.

I like the Mossbergs. If I had to pick one for home defense and no other consideration, I'd likely go with the 590 with ghost ring sights, 20" barrel so I can have 8+1 capacity, and I'd put a SureFire foreend on it. Likely shorten LOP to 13". Then spend money on formal classess and practice a lot.

I was set on my JC Higgins model 20 for my HD gun until I came across a Smith & Wesson model 3000 at a local gun shop.

It was a police/correction issued 12 gauge, 18 inch barrel and looks hardly used, no ware or handling marks.

Remington 870 if I had no money, or a Benelli M2 Tactical Standard (without the PG stock or GR sights) if I did.

I would keep my single shot H&R. I've done every bit of what's done to it and I'm comfortable shooting it. I've gotten to where i can eject a shell and load another one in about the time it would take to chamber another round in a pump, so why not grab for the lighter gun?

Oddly, I just got through watching "Quiggly Down Under" for the 100th time. :D

only one shotgun for home defense

I own several defensive shotguns:
Benelli M3 and an M4, Rem 870, Mossy 590A1
but for home defense what would I choose? my little short barreled Winchester 1300. Why? because all of my combat shotguns are two unweildly for my wife. the home shotgun has to be quick and light enough for a woman. My winchester is the only one that fits those requirments.

Mossberg 500 combo. While I appreciate the qualities of the Remington 870, the M 500 is lighter and just as dependable. It's also easier for the wife to handle, and the safety is better for her.

The shotgun is first in line for home defense, enough to deal with the usual rabid or wounded animal - until I can get to a .45....
