my brother in law has one in 12 gauge and likes it. but he never really shot it hundreds of times to test reliability. im thinking about one for hunting and home defense.

note: i already have 2 remington 12 gauge express pumps. i see that this board love them but i have been disappointed with them. i get failed to extract with any winchester ammo with both guns. remington ammo works much better but sometimes i get hesitation with feeding. i tried everything. i scrubbed the chambers, i cleaned both guns spotless.

what i really want is a beretta shotgun but i cant afford it. so im really interested in the charles daly. but im concerned why the police or military don't use auto loading shotguns.

Problems with Winchester shotgun ammo? The valu-pack Wal Mart stuff? If you go through the search function you'll find you have a lot of company. Put that stuff into an auto and you'll see even worse problems than with a pump. I even had problems with it in my double.
I guess I don't understand the hesitation with feeding since you are supplying the movement in racking the action with the forearm.

When your life depends on it, you go for the most reliable, versitile gun you can get. That is why a lot of police and military opt for the pump action guns.

A buddy of mine bought two CD semi-autos at Wal Mart to clay shoot with. Both are jam-o-matics. In a 100 bird round of sporting clays, he routinely gets 3-4 failures to cycle the second shell. Also, the bolt release button is on the lower LEFT hand side, making loading them a challenge.

Stick with your pumps and use better ammo. Those steel rimmed bulk packs cause far more feeding problems than brass shells.

CD's jam alot? This is something I do not believe that anyone has really ever spoken about before..... hehe

That Winchester ammo is the problem, not the 870.

Remington and Federal, even Wal-Mart budget bulk ammo and Estate (and also Winchester except for the junk bulk stuff) feed fine.

Don't use the Winchester ammo in any semiauto. You'll have trouble. I don't think they size the bases or something. Crap.

Anyway, I'd get a semiauto gun from a manufacturer, not an importer.

Beretta 3901 is a great gun, and not too expensive for a semiauto. And you can get parts, etc.

I don't like the down-market Remington semis. They're overweight and overpriced. I have an 870 Express; it's great. I paid less than half what a Wingmaster would cost. But the 11-87 Sportsman isn't cheap enough for what it is. I have an 1100 Magnum. Great gun.

Remington, Browning, Beretta. You no regretta.

3901 is the first gun to look at IMHO. Or a used 390 or 1100. Older Remingtons were better finished inside and are "forever guns" unless they were really abused. Browning Golds are oft-forgotten, but those who have them seem to love them.

Daly Problems

I own a Daly VR-MC Semi Auto. It has had approximately 75 shell through it. I have had problems with miss fires. There is usually a small indention in the primer but no fire. I have tried different brands of ammo. Does not seem to matter. I contacted daly and they will fix it. Just wondering if any ony else has had any problems?

Yep. Had the same problem. Traded my CD Maxi-Mag 3.5 auto for a Rem 870 Express 3" and never looked back. You can send it to CD to fix, but their reputation for slow service is legendary.

Those Beretta autos are great looking and feeling guns. I want one as well but I don't want to spend $1000 on a shotgun. I can afford it but I just don't see spending $1000 on a shotgun. Slowly my mind is finding a way of telling me that it is a smart buy and I will probably break down and get one.

I checked out a CD auto and I was not impressed at all. It is a piece of crap to put it bluntly. You would be better off with a good pump like a 870, Moss or Winchester 1300.

You can get a Winchester SX3 pretty reasonably, well, more reasonable than a Beretta. I'd rather have one, frankly, than Beretta. They've run sales on 'em at Bass Pro for under 500 before. I was tempted.

I don't hear a lot of bad about the Remington Spartan 453, either. I've got an auto I like a lot, though, Winchester 1400. Only way I'd get another auto is probably a Mossberg 935 for waterfowl hunting. I don't want a crossbolt safety when I get another one. Shooting lefty, a tang safety is quite desirable. My M500 and my doubles all have tang safeties. I've heard too much negative about the CDs to take the leap of faith. Rather spend a little more on a Mossy. At least if I had problems with it, I know it'd be repaired promptly.

I only know one person who has one but he's my best friend and we hunt together all the time. He's had his for 3yrs and never had a malfunction with his. And he shoot's everything from the cheap WW stuff to turkey loads.

So i know they let a good one slip threw every now and then.
Whether you get one or not sounds like it would be pure luck based on other posters bad luck with them. Which i totally beleive because i've had 3 taurus pistols that i bought nib that died on me.

BTW I've owned a Beretta automatic for around 6 yrs it's been flawless.

I HAVE THE SAME 870 Express problem!!!! i thought i was the only one... super x (the "ok" stuff) wont get out. glad to know its not just me. :banghead:

Your definetly not the only one with that problem my 870 marine magnum chokes on all the cheap winchester loads:mad:

Problems are problems, talking about genuine problems is not badmouthing. Sometimes ammo causes problems, but sometimes barrels/chambers cause problems also. I have had problems with one particular Remington 870 barrel, not from an Express gun but from one of those almost legendary Police guns. Even after repeated honing the chamber still sticks with one particular brand/load when the gun gets hot, so I quit using that load in that gun.

If I had less experience with 870s the experience would likely have caused me a lot more heartburn, and I might have sounded off louder about it. ANY make/model can have problems, and that includes 870s. The intent here should be to help people FIX problems if they have them. Badmouthing people or guns doesn't help fix problems.

If a problem can be fixed by scrubbing out a chamber and/or changing the brand of ammo used, it isn't much of a problem...

I have a CD 12ga Field Grade and had no problems with it. Have put about 500 rounds thru it of different types and brands, most cheap Wal-Mart 4 box packs. One time shot 150 rounds thru at one setting. Not a great gun but does what it is suppose to when it is suppose to.

Get a used Beretta 303, will go a couple years without cleaning, and the only down is the 391 handles a wider range of ammo. If you want a 303 to cycle 1 oz loads reliably, get an extra length 1/8" drill bit from an industrial supply house and open the gas ports.

CD guns are all Turkeys.

If you want a Beretta, try your local Walmart. I bought mine there for only a few more shekels than they wanted for the CD.
