Hello. I was at a gun show today and a dealer had a NIB S&W 4006 for $489 (I might be able to talk him down a bit). I've recently been interested in S&W 3rd gen guns mostly due to a fellow THRer telling me about them. Do any of you have any experience with this particular gun? I mostly want it for a range/HD gun but would occasionally carry it (yes, I know its a brick). Any good or bad reports on it would be greatly appreciated.

They are very good accurate and reliable pistols. They were some of the last generation of the all metal frame pistols made by S & W. Many law enforcement agencies used the 4006 over the years.

I think it's a good price on a good pistol. They cost a lot more new years ago. Go for it.

I'd look around for a police-trade in. I saw some at a gun show recently going for $300and up with 2 mags and night sights. Granted, they were beat up and the night sights probably had a year or so of use left in them, but they should still be solid shooters.

That's not a bad price for a NIB gun, but you should be able to find a used one for much cheaper since there's not much of a market for the 4006 any more.

I own the 411 (which is the matte finish & aluminum frame version), and I really like it. A good, solid, full-sized gun. Completely reliable with all of the different ammo I've put through it. $489 for NIB 4006 is a good deal. Buy it.

NIB S&W 4006 for $489. I would have jumped on it for that price. I have one of the early production S&W 4006 with adjustable sights. Probably only have about 800 - 1000 rounds thru mine. But it has never jammed, used it for a night stand gun for years.

They are a bit to heavy for my taste to carry, but as HD or range pistol they are excellent.

My local dealer gets used 3rd generation S&W in as trade in sometimes and sells them for $450 on up depending on the model and condition. They don't last long from what I have seen.

A really great but vastly under-rated pistol and a good price for a nib one. The plus side for buying new would be the lifetime warranty-though some say that S&W will honor service for defective used pistols.

My 4006 is very accurate, reliable, and easy to shoot, but it is a brick. $489 seems steep even for NIB given the market. For a few dollars more, you have your pick of the latest Glock, XD, or M&P in any caliber with hi-cap mags and would be IMO a better carry piece. I would hold out for a used one at a better price point since they are built like tanks.
