I now have a Remington PSS in .308 and would like to equip it with the best optics, keeping in mind practicallity and the fact that I hate to invest more in a scope than I did in the rifle. Any suggestions? One other thing, I did 22 years of military service so it's unlikely that I will be engaging targets in excess of 500 meters (I don't anticipate the Army recalling me or LA SWAT requesting my services).

a decent and fairly inexpensive (approx $200) scope is the bushnell 3200 series fixed power 10X40mm mil dot with target turrets.

I've got one that's seen a lot of use on top of a 308 bolt rifle, then on an AR, and it's kept its zero just fine.

the advise that i was always told is be willing to spend equal or 2 times as much on the glass as the rifle itself, and yes in a perfect world that would be great, and as you know the military dosen't pay that well, so i suggest that you go to www.riflescopes.com and look at the super sniper rifle scopes. they are the glocks of rifle scopes. they are more than worth the money they ask for. they will serve you well.

remington 700 pss .308, Millett 6-25 x 56, duplex, target turrets, sunshade, side focus, very clear, its held zero and will come back to zero at least for the 100 or so shots through the gun $375, they also have them in mil-dot reticle. They also have a 4-16x56 with the same features thats around $250

maybe a used scope, I have a leopold 3x9 varx ii on my rem 700 .308 varmit, I bought the scope used for $185 on auction arms. its in perfect shape, the seller says there is a minor scratch on it, but I have not found it yet. so far my best group is 5 shots at 100yds in .4 in. with hand loads.

Lizard. I have just put a VX7 with B&C on a little 308 finlite. I was at the range yesterday and once set up could get constant hold over hits at 300 to 500 with every round. At 500m the target is a 10 inch pipe endcap hanging from a stand. I like it because it produces every time. I think you can get the B&C in the lower end as well.

Scope for Rem .308 PSS

NcStar make some 3~12x50 scopes with some whistles and bells at very reasonable prices. To see their whole line of scopes and hardware visit them at NcStar.com

Possum hit the nail on the head. The SuperSniper is practically made for the 700 police. It has over 100moa of adjustment, mildot laser etched reticle, and is the best value in tactical style scopes at this time IMO. All for only $299 @ SWFA.com. They were designed for military application and hold or held some military contracts. Available in 10x, 16x, & 20x with a 30mm tube. I will be getting one for my new 700P next week.

FWIW, I put a Leupold MKIV 4.5-14x40 mil-dot on my PSS,and never looked back, unlike many people that bought SuperSnipers....
And to address a couple more of the above posts......NCstar is widely regarded as complete crapola.......
It is NOT necessary to spend over a certain dollar amount of the rifle for a scope, this is totally stupid. A good scope is a good scope, regardless of whether you're scoping a Stevens model 200 or a Parker Hale.Scopes should be purchased according to your needs, not according to some "formula".
The Bushnell Elite 3200 10x is a nice scope, but the lack of an adjustable objective will hinder you trying to shoot at distance, as its parallax is set at 100 yards. But they make a 5-15x40 mil-dot for another $100+ bucks that would be a great scope for the money.
And as cool as that giant Millet looks, 25 power is in many cases almost unusable, and the 56 mm. objective lens is a ridiculous waste of space and weight.
Do some Googling before you drop any $$, you'll likely find your best bet ( for the money) is a scope with 10-16 power,40-42 mm. objective, from a long established company with solid customer service.....

MIL-DOT

I cannot disagree with you. It's never a bad idea to go Leupold. I have several and can't say enough about them. I myself am going to try something new on this build for a couple of reasons a) they have a TON of vertical adjustment b) they have decent optics and laser etched reticles c) they are inexpensive and I know I can get my $$ back on ebay if I hate it. I shot with one once and really liked it. Reading around on optics forums it looks to be very popular with the tacticool crowd. The Mark IV is a great choice too. I consider the SuperSniper to be a better value than the VXIII Long Range I got for the last build. The VXIII is not overpriced IMO but the SS is a great value and is purpose built for tactical shooting.

Specifically, I recommend a used Leupold Mark 4, either 3.5-10x40mm or 4.5-14x50mm

Hey horsemany, back when i was scoping my 700 i VERY seriously considered the SuperSniper, and from what i've read, most are very happy with them, but i've also come across more than a few people claiming problems with them. ( i realize this is true with virtually everything ). And i've learned ,with optics even more so than many things, you want to do it right, or not do it at all.
While being very cost conscious, i've also long felt that, all other things being roughly equal within a price range, go with best re-sale value and warranty, which left me with Leupold.

Out of curiousity what problems have you heard of? I'm not doubting you, just curious. I've not heard of any problems but that doesn't mean much. Maybe I just haven't read the right forums. Again I can't disagree with you on the Leupy's. They are an excellent choice. I'm just ready to try something different I guess. I've got a gun cabinet full of gold rings though. I get kinda bored if I use the same stuff all the time.
