I have an opportunity to buy a Rossi 92 Puma in 44 magnum. These are the Interarms Imports from the late 80s early 90s. The gun rates in the 97th percentile of a superior condition for as old as it is. Seller is asking $595.
I'm thinking this is a fair price. Just would like to hear from fellow gunners.

One thing to keep in mind is that the groove diameter of the .44 mag carbines runs larger than that of revolvers. That's not Rossi being weird, that's Rossi following the SAAMI rifle specs.

I mention this because oftentimes someone will pick up one of the .44 mag carbines and complain of poor accuracy and bad leading when shooting their favorite cast bullets which happen to be sized at .429". But sized at .432" - .433" they shoot wonderfuly.

Just something to keep in mind.

I'd rather have a new one. Rossi has improved their 92's in recent years and I'd only buy one of that era if it were cheap, which that is not. For me it'd have to have a 3 in front of it.

I have to agree, for better or worse. Some like the older ones because they are pre-safety but that is all they are. They are not worth any sort of price premium if they are a standard example and often should be a discount compared to newer ones.

However, if it is available now and local it may be worth a negotiated price.

I see new Rossi r92s in stainless 44mag 20" locally for $729. Still a relative bargain for a great lever model.

Nothing on SoDak Armslist but maybe op can get a SoDak LGS to order one. Or GunBroker....

The older R92s also had the front sight integral with the front barrel band, instead of dovetailed into the barrel. This can be bad, or good, depending on who you talk to. Those who don't like the front sight integral with the barrel band dislike the fact that it's not easily changeable. Those who don't like the dovetailed front sight say that sometimes the dovetail machining can create a pinch point in the barrel which degrades accuracy.

My experience with my older R92 in .44 mag vs. my newer R92s in .357 mag and also .454 Casull is that I would prefer the newer dovetail style. I haven't found any accuracy difference at all, and I would definitely appreciate the ability to change out the stock front sight to a fiber optic. Just personal preference though. You can also change the front sight to a higher or lower sight to accommodate your needs. That's pretty difficult with the sight integral to the barrel band.
