[RANT]
I am new to the world of Sig pistols, and I am a little frustrated by something. Any light anybody can shed on this would help me to relieve my frustration, and is much appreciated.

Regarding sigforum.com and sigforums.com specifically...

I have tried to join both discussion boards as I am the fairly new owner of my first Sig pistol and I want to learn more about it.

I tried joining sigforum.com on 8/26. I responded within a couple of minutes to the automated email I received from them. On the 28th, my membership had still not been approved, so I replied to their email from "webmaster@" I was sent with a query, and never got an answer. Today being the 30th, and still not having my registration approved by an administrator, I'm wondering if this is the kind of outfit I want to participate with. Do they usually take that long getting around to approving your membership so you can post, or is there some kind of secret handshake I'm not aware of?

Same deal with sigforums.com, although it has, in all fairness to them, not been as long. I registered there early this morning, responded to the automated email, and nobody has yet approved my membership.

In neither case has anybody sent me an email explaining why my membership was rejected, if that is in fact the case.

I am the owner of a political/social commentary discussion board which has been active on the web since July 2003. We're not anywhere near as big as this discussion board is (which, BTW, kudos to the staff here, this is an EXCELLENT discussion board), but we've had a loyal core membership since day one. In any case, unless you registered there between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. central time, you wouldn't have to wait much more than 30 minutes to have your registration approved. I can assure that, if there were any reason for why we would reject your membership - such as a strong reason to believe that you were previously banned as a trouble maker under a different username - either I, or one of my administrators would send you a personalized email explaining why we had rejected your membership, and give you a chance to make your case for why we should accept it. That's just a simple matter of politeness. In the past 4 years, I've only had to do that twice. In any case, that is not relevant to my complaint because I've never been a member of either Sig board before.

One of the things I have really appreciated about THR is the level of discourse here, and the willingness with which more experienced and wiser heads share their knowledge without "talking down" to those who are just trying to learn more... ...AND, it didn't take more than a few minutes to process my membership and activate my posting privileges.

The truth is, since trying to join either of those boards has been a negative experience for me, I probably won't bother ever posting there - even if they do finally approve my memberships, but I would sure like to know if I am not the only one who has ever experienced this with either of them, or am I just crazy...

...and I can live with crazy, I just need to know. :D

(I've deliberately left my URL out of this post because this is a complaint about someone else's sites, not a plug for my own site. If anyone needs to know, they can check my profile for my website address.)

You've finally found a HOME!

Well I can't comment to your exasperated feeling other than to say; take a chill pill, a deep breath, and another drink of coffee. Fell better?

I have been a member of THR for several years, admittedly not very active, but a member none the less. I mostly hang around over on the S&W forum. THR is a good place to be.

So now that you have calmed down ask your questions sit back and enjoy the ride and as I do, when I fell as if I have something to significantly add: post your comments and helpful suggestions.

OH, Welcome To The High Road.:)

P.T.

Welcome aboard. I have always found that proprietary type forums that are specifically created around a specific gunmaker and/or firearms type/model are prone to some level of arrogance in believing that their brand/make/type is superior to everything that exists, I therefore choose to be among a more diverse crowd , like the forum here, which offers a wide array of firearms and RKBA interest and does not promote Glock, SIG, 1911s over everything else. welcome!, you may have found a civilized home.

The only reason I can think of for Sigforum not approving your membership is the use of some email domains that aren't allowed. you can understand the reasoning for this, however impractical it may seem. I would ry registering with an email addy that is unique--like your work or something other than a free-type email account. You don't need to worry about spam or anything off of Sigforum. I've never received anything from them. Also, once you are 'approved' you can change the email addy to whichever email you'd like to use.

As far as getting a reply from the Webmaster acct, I'm sure Para gets a boatload of junk mail and it takes time to sift through that stuff.

Don't let the registration stuff keep you off the board--it's a great group of people over there.

I attempted to join and finally recieved the follow-up from a well known hg users forum. I was frustrated at the time. IIRC it was four or five days before the appropriate response was delivered and I was allowed participation.

It was worth the wait and it is a good venue for said handguns.

To belabor the obvious many of these forums are free, run by the owner or a cadre of volunteers.

Be patient. It is the administration and probably has nothing to do with your application. Maybe the one man "IT Administrator" is on vacation.

There of late has been increased trolling and sabotage of these sites. Perhaps if there is a "waiting period" it should be pointed out or mentioned there may up to weeks delay. Perhaps it is an anomoly.

BTW have you tried the SIG section of the Glock Forum? I participate in the S&W and Kahr groups there and it is a fairly active board.

Also try The Firing Line.

Then there is THR. None better. ;)

Well, I really like it here. But in answer to the email address question... I own the domain name for my email address, and it is a unique one "annoyedman.com". Also, I did actually receive the emails from both sites asking me to click a link to validate my email, and both of them were properly validated. I just haven't been approved to participate.

There's a forum or two that I can't join because they won't accept "anonymous" email addresses such as hotmail.com. No big deal, I'm on too many forums as it is :p

Disagree. They are not like that.

(I have issues with that forum - irrelevant to this discussion - but that is not one of them.)

Agreed. That's all it is.

As I stated above, I do no have one of those Yahoo/hotmail/free email addresses. My email address is associated with my domain name, which is a unique name, which I own, and which only has about 10 email addresses associated with it.

I occasionally look at m1911.org, which is a pretty good site... but this always ends up being the site i turn to. I tried to register for glocktalk (i had a few glock specific questions) but for some reason it claims my IP is banned... and a couple of weeks ago i sent them an email about it, but still haven't gotten a response... thankfully some people on here were able to help me out.

Black Knight,
I'm also a member of the S&W forum and I'm a little surprised to hear an AOL email account is not honored. I would suggest you shoot an email off to the admin on the S&W forum and see if he can help.

dhoomonyou,
A Yahoo email account won't help. S&W won't accept any anonymous email addresses. Yahoo falls into that category along with MSN, Hotmail, Netscape and all the other free email accounts. I'm not sure if Gmail is included but it probably is too.

I would not take it personally.

Now I don't have any Sigs, and being honest the last time I clicked to a link to that forum, was because a THR informed me - I was being racked over the coals over there pretty good.
Matter did not have anything to do with guns, instead a S&T matter.

Internet simply reflects Society.
Some Forums are having problems with members, just like stores back in the day had problems with immature folks and phone calls.
"Do you have Prince Albert in a Can?" kids would call and ask
"Better let him out then" - was of course the reply, and the kids would call every store that sold tobacco products.
So as shared, some Email addresses are just too known to cause headaches to forum admins.

Some are keeping membership numbers down.
I was denied, even after being spoken for at one forum.
"Steve, nothing against you, feel free to lurk, email me, just we are keeping the membership count low".

Some forums I belong to are private, the public cannot see, unless a registered member.
Some require being spoken for, or ID.
I am elsewhere, just not under this user name
I really do need keep matters private and secure, and especially on those sites.

THR is where I post the most
THR is My Social Experiment.

Information: I use OLD archives a LOT. TFL is at the top of the list, then THR, then some Old BBs like .rec guns , Numrich, and others.

Sigs:
I'd go w-a-y back to the early days of THR to find information.
Then hop over to TFL and start in about 1999, IIRC, some great civil and polite discussions back in the old days.

PT how do you join if they tell you your e-mail address is invalid?

Black Knight,

My internet provider is BellSouth and I just log right on in the same day, it has been several years ago but it seems like it didn't take but just a few minutes. I've been there ever since.

I like THR, it is a more generalize topic type forum with a smattering of everything where the S&W Forum is pretty much S&W's. I collect a few Smiths as a hobby. I carry either a Ruger SP101 or GLOCK 21; and have been on both those forums also, but they just offer me much. Regards P.T.

Will miracles never cease? I've finally been approved as a member at sigforums.com. The other site has still not approved my membership and can go hang itself.

Besides, I'll probably find all the answers I ever needed right here.

When I joined sigforum.com, it took like a week or maybe a little more to get approved to post. Pain in the butt, but it ended up being worth it in the end. Great resource for all things Sig, the most indepth I've seen, and plenty of other makes are covered as well. Some of the more active posters don't even have Sigs. :p

I wouldn't limit yourself to just one forum or two, join them all, they all have something to offer. :)

Agreed, the people on SF are a diverse bunch with knowledgeable people in many areas. Some are hardcore Glock fans, 1911 fans, and even HK fans. For a forum dedicated to one platform, they can think outside the box too (non SIG).

TheAnnoyedMan,
Not to worry. Even if you don't get onto SF, you can find a LOT of SIG information on this board. After all, many SF members are also on here.

Good luck!

Some of the narrow focus forums are pretty well controlled by a group of people, usually about a half dozen, whose main interest seems to be in congratulating each other on their wisdom and knowledge and confirming each others opinions even when they are wrong.

Since all discussion consists of group self-praise and endless repetition of current beliefs, those sites are of little interest.

Yep, and proud of it. By and large, the SIGForum members are pretty much the same as the THR, i. e., highly informative, civil, and engaging with thought-provoking ideas. A little patience just might pay off.
