Was going to order a scope mount from Optics Planet Actual Weight:0.3630 lb, the cost was $8.75 so OP is off my list.

On any small item, the shipping is usually more expensive than what you are buying. But, what choice do you have? I just had to buy a small belt for an orbital sander. The belt cost $2.50 shipped in an envelope for $8.00. Pay it or toss the sander. Like it? NO, but I want to use my sander.

Did you think they were going to put it in a first class envelope?

I shipped a shotgun last week with insurance and tracking numbers it was a little over 90 bucks.

When you get down to a certain level you're not paying for weight anymore, and hence it becomes irrelevant.

Basically, if something's really heavy, you have to pay extra, but it doesn't get progressively cheaper the lighter you get - eventually you bottom out and you're just paying them to take a package across the country. USPS flat rate is a little cheaper than that but they're subsidized (and losing money). If they work with any other carrier that doesn't sound unreasonable at all.

Thats why small little items like this are generally where local shops shine. Even if they charge 2x as much as an online vendor if you avoid shipping its worth it.

USPS would have been 2.90, OP did not give me a choice and shipped it UPS and it will take 7 days vs USPS 3, this is not my first rodeo, just my first RIPOFF

I think you do get gouged now and again.
I just ordered 8 Safariland Comp III speedloaders and a couple CD2 carriers. They were on sale. Shipping was right at $19. I think they made back a little of the sale price by over charging for shipping.
The order should come in today. My guess, postage will be more like $9 - $10 on the package when it arrives.

dprice pretty much nailed it, I think shipping charges are just a piece of the delivered to your door cost. I don't let a few dollars get me too excited anymore, it isn't worth worrying about....:)

This is the first I've heard of a retailer charging for shipping. I'll be sure to sticky this thread so everyone knows to check shipping rates before placing a order.
