P229

Welcome to the High Road!

The P229 is an excellent handgun, and of my .40's, is the one I shoot the most accurately. I have a very good CompTac ( www.comp-tac.com) Pro Undercover holster that fits very well. All that said, it is a double stack handgun, and is pretty thick. I find the single stack P239 a better concealed carry handgun for long duration carry and under lighter top cover. It is both thinner and lighter.

I've carried a P229 in 357sig for several years as part of my daily kit. I use a Comp-Tac C-TAC holster that has been the best synthetic holster I've found, bar none. I'm pretty thin, so your mileage may vary.

I've never felt undergunned with the P229.

Regards,
Rabbit.

My current carry piece in .40 S&W and .357 SIG. The result of several years of personal trial and error; of pondering, asking, comparing, and researching; of long and arduous field testing; and of racking my head repeatedly over which gun is the best for me.

I am completely delighted with it.

My duty weapon is a 229 in .40. I also own 2 of them in my personal off duty collection as well.

My current carry piece is a P229 in .40S&W. My experience mirrors that of Heraclitus...I keep returning to the SIGs. Nothing else works quite as well for me, and I shoot the SIGs the best of all handguns I've carried.

In my opinion, the P229 (and its folded-steel-slide brother, the P228) is one of the top carry pieces of all time. The P229 in particular is probably the best .357/.40 carry gun money can buy.

Pros and Cons

As other posters have pointed out, the P229 is an excellent gun. I have one in .40 caliber that I have carried, and it is reliable and accurate, with good grip ergonomics and a smooth trigger.

The only downside of the P229 for CCW is that it is somewhat thicker and heavier than some of the alternatives. If you compare it to other .40 caliber guns like the Glock 23, Walther P99 or Kimber Pro Carry in .40, the P229 is several ounces heavier and noticeably thicker through the slide. While this extra weight is an advantage when shooting the gun, it can start to feel heavy on the belt after carrying it for 8 hours. I find that I would rather carry my Glock 23 all day, but I feel I can shoot the P229 somewhat better. So its a tradeoff for me.
