Lt. gov. crashed Marine's funeral, kin say

Saturday, July 23, 2005
By Tom Barnes, Post-Gazette Harrisburg Bureau

The family of a Marine who was killed in Iraq is furious with Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll for showing up uninvited at his funeral this week, handing out her business card and then saying "our government" is against the war.

Rhonda Goodrich of Indiana, Pa., said yesterday that a funeral was held Tuesday at a church in Carnegie for her brother-in-law, Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich, 32.

She said he "died bravely and courageously in Iraq on July 10, serving his country."

In a phone interview, Goodrich said the funeral service was packed with people "who wanted to tell his family how Joe had impacted their lives."

Then, suddenly, "one uninvited guest made an appearance, Catherine Baker Knoll."

She sat down next to a Goodrich family member and, during the distribution of communion, said, "Who are you?" Then she handed the family member one of her business cards, which Goodrich said she still has.

"Knoll felt this was an appropriate time to campaign and impose her will on us," Goodrich said. "I am amazed and disgusted Knoll finds a Marine funeral a prime place to campaign."

Goodrich said she is positive that Knoll was not invited to the funeral, which was jammed with Marines in dress uniform and police officers, because the fallen Marine had been a policeman in McKeesport and Indiana County.

"Our family deserves an apology," Rhonda Goodrich said. "Here you have a soldier who was killed -- dying for his country -- in a church full of grieving family members and she shows up uninvited. It made a mockery of Joey's death."

What really upset the family, Goodrich said, is that Knoll said, 'I want you to know our government is against this war,' " Goodrich said.

She said she is going to seek an answer from Gov. Ed Rendell's administration if it opposes the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Knoll was traveling yesterday, away from the Capitol, and couldn't be reached. But an aide said she "extends condolences to all families who have lost loved ones" serving in the military.

Without having talked to her, the aide, who asked not to be named, said, "The family members of fallen soldiers are in our hearts and prayers. Our prayers go out to their loved ones in their hour of grief."

Asked to comment on Goodrich's complaints about Knoll's conduct at the funeral, the aide said that "would be inappropriate."

I'm not posting this as a dig at those who disagree with our actions in Iraq, but simply to show the inappropriateness of this government official. If someone disagrees with the war, that is their choice and they are entitled to their opinion, but there has GOT to be a better place to state that than at a Marine's funeral...

I'm surprised she was able to walk out of there.

Extremely disrespectful to the memory of this fallen Marine and his friends and family. :cuss: :cuss:

Marine honor guard should have put her under the casket. Or given her the 21 gun salute.

Despicable. I guess Tom Delay should have gone to Rachel Corrie's funeral and said she was a traitorous marxist anarchist terrorist supporting squashed roadkill whore and posthumously revoked her US citizenship.

It's about as tasteful than what knoll did.

Dear Ms. Knoll:
Your uninvited presence at the funeral of a United States Marine is just plain disgusting. To express your political opinions at that funeral is beyond comprehension. Your actions were selfish, classless and despicable.

Ms. Knoll:

I just heard about the stunt you pulled at Joseph Goodrich's funeral on Tuesday. Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you that was a disgusting thing to do. You are a despicable person.

I just sent Gov. Rendell an email asking when he would demand her resignation. When I lived in PA I always wondered why the Commonwealth Govt. was so stupid. :barf: Don't have to wonder anymore. :fire:

What's a funeral invitation? Seriously. I've been going to funerals since the '50s and I've never seen, or heard of, a funeral invitation. From all I've seen, the funeral notice is published in the paper and anyone who wants to go is welcome.

I wouldn't introduce myself at a funeral by handing over my business card. That's just downright tacky.

Political statements at a funeral? Tacky x2. Who raises these people?

John

There were two funerals that day.

The first for the honored dead public servant.

The second for the career of the dishonorable public servant.

How about a e-mail address so we can tell the Gov what we think of his #2 . I bet we could make life very interesting Captial for a few days.

Sad, but many people today do not have manners nor common sense, many
need an attitude adjustment. :cuss:

I wonder if anyone filmed it. If it happened like they say and it's on film, she'll be lucky to get elected dogcatcher.

This has been my experience as well. Considering that the man was a police officer the presence of a government official should have been both expected and welcomed, however the Lt. Govs actions were still dispicable.

3 Key Facts...

... need to be pointed out here.

1. Her official biography notes she's a graduate of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
2. Her bio also indicates that President Bill Clinton once appointed her to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.
3. She was elected Lt. Gov. along with Governor Ed Rendell.

Now...

1. When was the last time anyone OTHER THAN a Liberal Pacifist Cultural Elitist was cranked out of Harvard's Kennedy School?
2. Do you really think Bill Clinton would appoint a Conservative with a patriotic/Defend-American Interests/conflict-tolerant/military background to ANYTHING?
3. Democrat Gov. Fast Eddy Rendell's long-standing position on Gun Control (he's anti-2A) usually ALSO translates to a parallel Anti-War position these days. Yeah, I know, I'm baiting here, but the few courageous pro-2A Liberals who post here are vastly outnumbered by their Blue State counterparts who are predictably Anti-Gun, Anti-War, Casualty-Averse, and Anti-Anything Bush.

Pennsylvania's Lt. Governor, by her crass and unpatriotic actions, just proved this case. Accordingly, is it any wonder why the Democrat party continues to lose ground in the Heartland?

I believe the people advocating the Lt Gov's death are more than over-reacting. From what it sounds like, she didn't show up with the intention of "crashing the funeral".

The business card was given to one person who asked who she was. No where in the article did it spell out that she was walking around handing her card to every person in attendence. It says she handed ONE card to ONE person that inquired to who she was. Maybe she was handing out cards by the fistful, but it doesn't say so in the article nor does it even imply she was doing so.

I've done similiar things in the past. Gone to buddies' funerals without any invitation (didn't know such things existed), talked to the family, and offered them my card usually with the statement "If you ever need anything, lemme know" (or words to those affects).

Her comment regarding the Iraqi war was incredibly stupid, and a more than a little inappropriate for a funeral. However, I think this is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Knoll is a PA polition. a fairly damning statement in itself.
i got my first insight about PA politics when the judge of elections in my ward delivered 1432 votes for dick nixon.... from a 1230 vote ward.
