It's not a recent term, it's the proper term, and I encourage its use. It's a cool word.
Proper to You zahc. If You and others choose to call it by the P.C. term "marker", do so.
I, and other players, will continue to describe them the same way We have been since the early eighties: "Paintball Guns"(Yes, I know, the Nel-spot 007 was called a marker when used on cattle and trees) .
Most of them have gun-like features, and some of them closely resemble firearms because the market demanded it. Especially for woods ball/scenario players. Whereas most "tourney" players prefer the opposite.
It's a free country. Play on and have fun.
