I'm looking for a carry pistol that is smaller than my Springfield full sized 1911. I have the opportunity to buy a friend's Para 12 45 but I don't know anything about them. Can anyone tell me about the quality / performance of this pistol and what a fair price would be? Thanks.

no use with that particular one. my p14 .45 Gun Rights model has been flawless. paid 875 out the door, brand new. i know its not much help but I felt like sharing

Mag catch is made of plastic = need to get a steel replacement from CDNN; I have on all of my Para's.
Magazines are great from the factory for several years, but I have needed new mags ( springs )
Hogue wraparound grip is the best thing ever on the P-12 my honey carries off duty, according to HER.
185gr bullets work alot better in this size pistol than the 230's for us.
Depending on the model and wear on the pistol, I'd guess ( but don't know) value between friends should be around $400-475.

I picked up a P10-45 Limited recently.

Haven't shot it much, but seems to function perfectly. Also, very little indication that it was shot much by the previous owner. I'm going to put it at under 200 rounds through it in it's lifetime. I also prefer the Hogue Grips on it, makes the little booger easier to hold on to.

Mag release is plastic. Also, mine does not have regular handgrip bushings like most 1911's. Instead, the grip screws thread directly into the frame. Had to make a trip to the gunsmith to clean the threads the other day, need some new screws now. I do not know if the P12 has this same concept/design, but wouldn't hurt to double check the threads and screws.

I've been shooting my Para P13 for over 10 years now. For self-defense, be absolutely religious about changing the magazine springs. Just something about the design on the Paras that make them fail faster than others. I think it is the thin wire and fat tube of a doublestack .45ACP that causes excessive wear. Upgrade to the Wolffe +10% springs http://www.gunsprings.com/SemiAuto/ParaOrdnanceNF.html#P12

If it is an alloy frame, you may want to shoot lighter loads to decrease hand strain and help prolong the life of the frame.

If you find the grip a bit too "fat" for your hands or for concealed carry, some have removed them entirely and put grip tape directly to the frame.

I've carried an early single action P-12 for years and it has proven to be reliable and accurate. It is referred to as the "Clown Car" by my friends since big bullets just keep coming out of it long after you'd think there's no way that many could be there.

I bought a used Para 12-45 about a year ago and I have to say even though I probably paid a little too much for it ($550.00 and I did get three mags with it) it has fuctioned perfectly for me. I have an Ambi safty and I put a Wilsons Combat extended slide stop on it since I felt the reach was a little long. Good, reliable shooter!
