Love the .270. O'Connor and all that jazz. I choose the .308 as it's more likely to be found at 3 in the afternoon, while rooting through the remnants of a burned out National Guard Armory. You're not going to find a 6.5 Creed there either. But that probably will never happen...

I picked the trusty .270. I find it to be a dang nice combination of power, range-trajectory and ammo versatility combined with a recoil level that isn’t abusive.

The only other one I would pick that wasn’t on the list is the 7mm Rem Mag. Very similar to the ,270 but with heavier bullets available for bigger critters.

Stay safe.

.30-06 for the ability to kill all large and medium game in NA, plus social functions. 220 gr to 150 gr gives huge performance window with effective factory ammo, and you can stretch that out to 250 gr and 110 gr with handloads. I stockpile factory 220 gr RNSP and 150 gr FMJ M2 Ball for my needs.

2nd place for .308 for almost as good of performance and a close 3rd for my sentimental favorite- 7x57mm.

.308 because that is what I own; if I owned other calibers listed, I would select one of them. In a marksman’s hands, they all do about the same thing. If you can’t shoot, it really doesn’t matter which caliber you pick; if you can shoot, it really doesn’t matter which caliber you pick.

If a person wants to hunt a diverse spectrum of species, compromising means compromising, so by default, I’d go with the largest cartridge available to ensure appropriate power is available for the largest of species. Of the list then, I pick 7RM. Given a 30cal magnum choice, I would have chosen that instead.

But that’s not a reflection of which cartridge I enjoy the most, or would prefer to own, or would even prefer for most of the huntable species I pursue. It’s simply a concession to the choosing the most powerful cartridge available on the list to suit the largest of game I would pursue. An overall uninteresting and dispassionate choice based on systematic objectivity rather than actual subjective preference. My answer being reflective of how I think rather than what I think. Boring.

deer/bear/elk etc or big game season is usually two weeks out of the year in a lot of areas. what are you gonna shoot for the rest of the the year?
