An argument between an off-duty Philadelphia police officer and her 16-year-old son over discipline turned into a tussle over her service pistol during which the weapon went off, killing the teenager, police said today.
No charges have been filed and the Police Department's Homicide Squad and Internal Affairs Division were both investigating Tuesday night's shooting.
Capt. Benjamin Naish, a department spokesman, said the officer, not immediately identified, was "understandably distraught."
Police said that the officer had been having unspecified trouble with her son and that an argument over discipline broke out in their home on the 5700 block of West Girard Avenue in Carroll Park about 9:30 p.m. It turned into a physical struggle, with the two wrestling for her Glock pistol.
One shot went off, hitting the boy in the head, police said.
The youth, Joshua Wright, was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, police said.
Naish said other family members were in the house when the fight broke out.
