Went to the gun store today with a pocket full of gift cards and came home with a Savage 111 in 30-06. Anyone have any good factory or handload recommendations?

I prefer H4350, IMR4350 if I can't find it. I've had good success with 150-180 gr bullets working up to near max loads. I've used mostly Hornady and Nosler bullets with about equal success.

My loads shoot:

150's at 3000-3025 fps
165's at 2880-2900 fps
180's at 2780-2800 fps

Those loads will keep 3 shots under 1" every time in my best rifle. Maybe a bit over 1" in the others.

I am just getting into handloading so I can't wait to see what this rifle will do. I bought some 168 GR HPBT Match bullets (Hornady) a few months ago to load for my son but we got busy and let it slide. Maybe now I can get back to it. I will definitely be trying out some of the suggestions you guys give.

ontarget: I shoot a Savage 111 in 30-06 and have for many years. That rifle in 30-06 is one of my all time favorites. As the others have told you IMR4350 & H4350 powders work very well in most 30-06`s. But I have found H-4895, H-380,Varget and WIN-748 powders preform very well for me also. As far as bullet selection, I have over the years shot most every Brand and Weight of bullet at one time or other. But I have had very good luck, for the last several years with the Plastic Tipped Boat Tail Bullets in 150gr, 165gr, and 180gr Bullets for any hunting I do. But don`t rule out the 125gr bullets or especially the Hornady 110gr V-Max or Nosler 110gr Varmageddon bullets. If your rifle will shoot them well, You will have a Super Varmint Rifle. For in my Savage 111 they are both Just Coyote Killing Machines. IMHO A Savage 111 in a 30-06 is just a great choice for just about any Hunting or Varminting situation, you might fine your self in. Good Luck To You:

I have a 116. The entire Savage 110 line seems sweet although I have not shot them all.

Well, I got it out to the range today, which is actually only on my back porch... And only got to shoot 12 rounds through it before the front action screw fell out. I was able to find it but the threads in the receiver were buggered up. Rather than making things worse I just put her up and got out the AR. Should I call Savage or just run a tap through the hole myself? The gun was NIB on Saturday.

If that screw is not too far gone...I'd be tempted to do like you said...run a tap in to clean things up and put some blue lock-tite on it. You've got eyes on it. Your call.

Mine won't but will shoot 59 grs H 4831 with a 165 gr bullet into 1" - 1 1/2" 5 shot group. Good enough for any deer that I've shot with it.
