I apologize in advance if my question is stupid. I was wondering if you had one of the Pietta Colt Navy .44 cal sheriff models with the rebated cylinder, and you put a .36 cal cylinder and barrel on the rebated frame if it would be safe to use.

Kaeto,

Not stupid...A good question.

First go look at this thread over at CAS City. I show the differences in the frames, barrels and cylinders.

Theoretically it should work, but there are always some small fitting issues they take care of at factory assembly where there may be some differences. There are enough differences between my Uberti Army 1860 (.44 Caliber) and Navy models '51. '61 and Leech & Rigdon (.36 caliber) that they aren't just mix and match. I can't even mix and match the majority of the barrels and cylinders between the various Navy models

I wish I could help you with the Piettas but I only have a pair of Short Barreled Pietta 1860 Army Models. I have Navy models from several different manufacturers, including 1851s, 1861s and Leech and Rigdons but none of them are Piettas.
