Pistol/Rifle brass disappearing from ranges

Folks,

Just thought I'd toss in my .02 worth; food for thought. I found out that due to the escalating price [value] of scrap brass, copper, and aluminum [among others] that people are scooping up all of our scrap and once fired brass at the ranges for the scrap value. One friend told me that he watched one person fill up 5 gallon buckets of rifle brass in every caliber in less than an hour. Consequently, we are paying higher prices for reloadable [new or once fired] brass.

Look at the cost and availability of .223 ammo. The only available .223 I could find was the Wolf ammo at $100 for a 500 round can. Remember when this was advertised at $63.00? Retail and wholesale distributors in my area (SC) tell me that anything with brass or copper in it will continue to escalate and that another price hike is coming in August.

Pick up and Save your brass; trade for calibers you need. This won't last long.....even Wally World is running out.

BTW, I need some once fired 45-70 if you have any for sale.

i noticed last year when i went to the range there wasn't as much if any brass on the ground....... there is a dumpster on site and i had gotten brass out it too but not the last couple of times i was there... i only get to the range very few times a year..... i keep all my brass .357mag and .38 spl to reload and always have...... i suppose a guy should take a bucket and pick up all the brass he can in every caliber to trade for what you can use.......the last time i was at the range there were millions of .22 rimfire brass laying around it seems like a real pain in butt to pick up that..... the weight would add up real fast for scrap brass though......

Ah....recycling is recycling isn't it? My indoor range has been selling scrap brass to metal recyclers since forever. I mean the stuff isn't getting blasted into space or piled into an atom smasher is it? Reloads make up only part of the ammo steam. I don't recall every seeing a box of reloaded anything at WallyWorld.

If you follow trends in Europe is seems their new environmental laws make it plausable at some future date the US could become a dumping ground for all sorts on recyclable metals they've chosen to dispose of. That could actually cause a drop in metal prices everywhere but Europe.

I pass on the paranoia.

I hate to burst your bubbles guys, but in the last 6 weeks i have gotten lots of fliers and ammo catalops that are saying right now is the cheapest price for 223 in YEARS. They tell me i can get as much or as little of it i want, in standard nato green tip current production, and in all the varmint type loadings. I can get 100 rounds or a semi of it.

NOthing really seems to jive, as the price of copper just came down other month.

Except for LEO quailifing shoots, I'm finding only cheapo brass at the range.

My $0.02 wirth, the cheapo brass is good for maybe two reloads if you are lucky. And the extractors are tearing up the rims due to the softer metal the cheap brass is made of.

It's the reason I buy STAR brass and reuse it!

I hate reading my year old SG news and seeing the "old" prices on ammo. I remember when wolf was new to ammo, and 7.62x39 was less than $100/1k SHIPPED. Now it is $189=tax/shipping. And whoda thunk 9mm at over $100/1k? Best I can find now is WWB 100round boxes for ~$14/ea. Not even Q loads!

Don't even get me started on what prices of surplus .223/5.56nate used to be....

The only increases in prices that affect me are the skyrocketing lead shot prices, I've stopped shooting 12ga and now shoot 20 and 28, but I enjoy those gages more anyhow so it isn't too bad. I remember when Wolf 7.62x39 was super cheap, but I can still afford to shoot it. I refuse to panic about things that are outside my control.

I'm like the rest of us out there. If you're getting flyers on cheap ammo, please do share with us, or let me know what you can get and I'll be happy to buy from you.

Most of the jobbers and wholesalers I routinely deal with have told me that much of their "dedicated" suppliers have told them that ammo will be 6 - 8 months behind in deliveries. I even contacted the local law enforcement distributor to see what was available.

Absolutely "NO" 40 S&W practice ammo [that is normally in stock] and none to fill the state contract they currently have with the manufacturers.

"This will blow your mind". Remember all the steel cased ammo left on the ground at the range? Its disappearing too. One of the scrap yards locally is taking anything steel for $$$$.

I'm stocking up on all the calibers I routinely use.

Anybody have any once fired 45-70 brass? [lol!]

Yeah on my rifle team at the highschool we collect empty shells and sell it for more ammunition. Saved a lot of money too.

I've heard that brass and copper prices are jumping because the Chinese are buying up all they can. Now the copper is being used mostly to finally bring power and phones to the something like 80% of the country that doesn't have it, but the brass is making me nervous....
A guy I know runs a junk yard, he just scrapped out 450+ cars and trucks, the payout was a six-figure check!!!!
