Please shoot this rifle idea down, .357 Mag semi-auto

I made four .44 Rem Mag AR-15 rifles back in 2000-2001. They ran off Desert Eagle mags. It was very difficult to tune them just right to feed with those mags. It ended up being too time consuming, so I dropped them.

I imagine a .357 mag setup would be a pain in the ass as well.

I also made a 10mm Magnum M1 Carbine for my dad for Christmas one year. It runs good.

HEY!
TR's not lurking anymore!

Tony builds wonderfully weird crazy stuff.

I'd sure buy one of his toys. Converting stuff to autopistol cartriges sounds like a potentially easier thing in a semi than worrying with a rimmed cartrige to me.

Why not .45WinMag or 10mm...even .50AE?

Of course, there's that whole LeMag balloon juice thing....

Regards,
Rabbit.

I also built one M1 carbine in 502 Thunder Sabre. Basically a 50AE case with a 7.62x39 case head.

I had a LeMag carbine in the shop chambered in 50AE and it was a complete abortion. That gun was obviously sold to the customer knowing that it was not going to work. That's why the customer sent it to me to retrofit the thing to 502TS.

They are just way too time consuming to be commercially marketable. You would be looking at $2,500+ plus for a big bore M1 carbine that works.

Tony you have just crushed my dream gun. I have always wanted a .44mag AR, I guess I should just be happy someone else thought of it and sunk the money into find out that they don't work. I guess that one will have to remain in fantasy land.

Hey Tony, what do you think about those Rhineland Arms 45 Win mag conversion kits? Would be neat, but I don't have the tools to convert one myself. Mabee we would get a group order on the forum and have you make them using the surplus Mauser recievers that Sarco has.

Armalon of England make Enfields in every imaginable caliber from .357 to .50 AE. They will do any caliber you ask.

Of course, these are bolt action, not semi-auto but maybe the same sort of thing could be done with an SLR?

I have always felt one of the biggest assets of any .357 firearm was its ability to use a wide range of available ammo , fron the lowest power 38 sp wadcutter target ammo up through the thumping 180-200 gr cast bullet.By going semi auto you will have to chose a fairly narrow power range and stick only with that. Possibly some type of adjustable gas block might help some. Why limit yourself to a slow to load/unload tube mag, just choose any of many available semi auto cartridges and use a removable magazine.

I believe the Taurus Thunderbolt rifles are available now .
Gun Test did a reveiw of Taurus,Beretta and US Firearms clones of the Colt Lightnig pump rifle in 45 Colt they felt the Taurus was the best of the three primarily of the fact the other two were 2-3 times more exspensive than the Taurus.

I have always wanted a Marlin 336 in 357 Maximum. The only problem I see is possible feeding issues with 38 Specials. Yea, I could always get a 35 Remington, but with the "Mad Max" you can shoot any 38/357/357max out there.

While I love my Deerfield, not having any recoil is not one of its virtues. It requires a heavy load to cycle correctly, if you have the right load there is no problem there, and that bare curved butt plate cries for a recoil pad. A stock similar to those on the new M30s would be great. My wife gave up shooting it because of recoil and took my 1895C away from me instead. Mine is very accurate and drops deer in their tracks. Can’t shoot cast in it and that may be the only reason I might, gulp, get one of the Ruger lever actions. You can usually pick up one cheap and you know the barrel, 1in 20, is going to shoot well, unlike some of the other .44 lever actions. But you’re right, it’s ugly. Maybe I could just shoot it in the deep woods where no one would see me.

I think we've just invented the Winchester 1907 and the .351 Winchester cartridge.;)
